A little story about my car (STI)

So I bought my Subaru Impreza WRX STI (longest name ever) in feb of 2005.

I modded it here and there, ran it for 2 years at about 307 whp and 372 w ft/lbs on intake/exhaust/tune/methanol injection.

Good for a a 12.55 @ 109 in the quarter. Mostly what I did was auto-x it though.

YouTube - Face Melting

This past spring I decided to up the turbo size.

In early march, I installed:

-Gt30r turbo
-external wastegate
-front mount intercooler
-850cc injectors
-ported intake manifold
-doubled the size of my meth injector

the top is the stock intake risers with the emissions device in, and the bottom is it ported out

this was good for 425 w hp and 420 w tq!!!!!

stock it was 300/300

you figure ~20% drivetrain losses...

It was at about 530 crank horsepower

heres a comparison of before and after

then it looked like this:

for 2 WEEKS, it went like a raped ape. I was hoping for mid 11's in the quarter.

0-100 in less than 10 seconds in an AWD car is pretty breathtaking.

The block SHOULD HAVE HELD.

Stock sti block is good for 400-450 whp

so it was definitely pushing the edge, but it was a very "safe" tune, and the methanol really lowers your cyl temps and has an excellent octane rating, so theres no fear of knock.

I was driving to upstate NY for work, and about in burlington it blew. Little load on the engine, 4 hours into a 5 hour trip, cruise on at 80, it just let go.

piston #4 grenaded and took out the left head.

flatbed from VT to NH was $500 alone.

I normally do ALL my own work, but I just dont have a garage I could occupy long enogh for this project so I had to pay a shop to do it, which I hated.

Its been 3 months now....

put in a fully built block with forged pistons, moly rings, forged rods, arp head studs, machined crank, and upgraded oil pump.

SUPPOSED to be able to pick it up today, but maybe tomorrow, to break it in then have to take it back down to get it tuned.

After 3 months, and it being late june, I am having a really, really hard time waiting much longer!

Its an amazing car, 4 doors, pretty cheap inurance, mid 12's with minimal mods, actually handles like an animal, 22 mpg, and DRIVE THE BITCH ALL WINTER LONG!

front and rear diffs are limited slip, and the center diff is lockable from the cabin, + snowtires, and it is a TANK

It is an 05 with 70k miles on it. it gets driven a lot , and HARD, but I take good care of it, and she usually treats me pretty well.

11.49 and faster and you need a cage at epping, so my "goal" is to get tossed

Re: A little story about my car (STI)

Nice car man. The GT30's a nice upgrade. Did you paint the wheels or did they come like that? I would like to see how the gold sti wheels would look on your car.

My buddy has an 01 Audi S4 that moves pretty good. He's got a few mods done and he's about to do the turbo/fueling/exhaust upgrades. Those awd cars pull pretty hard and they're awesome in the snow.

I'd love to throw a big turbo and some other go fast goodies in my GTI, but I cant justify it with all the work I would have to do to turn it into a fast FWD car.

welllllllllll 22 mpg was when I was at 307 whp

It went down to 18 after the mods.

Not too bad still, but thats also on 93 octane, and you have to add in the price of the methanol I burn as well. But its still not bad at all, gets better mileage than most v8s

Haha, fair enough. Sick ride.

Only, where's the NOS go?? And I hope you aren't granny shifting, - remember to double clutch on the upshift, like V.Diesel does. Saves those fried piston rings.

Re: A little story about my car (STI)

I had a WRX, not an STi though. It was a slick car, it screamed. One night we got over a foot of snow, plow trucks of course pile snow up in the driveway which wasn't plowed...my brother said you're not backing that car out of the driveway....I said watch me and did it with all season tires.

unfortuantely mine had the infamous "4th gear grind" like so very many others had. Subaru (at the time at least) didn't want to man up to it...and refused to cover it under warranty. Guess it was around $1500 to drop the tranny alone. Ha, bye bye WRX. I miss ya but oh well.

getting out of debt is the big reason as to why I no longer have it. Now with gas prices and it wanting higher octane fuel, another reason to not have it...needed more eco friendly cage.

Sucks yours let go like that. damn cages

I use my stock wheels for snow tires

17"x8" 225/45/17 snows

street tires:

17"x 9" Black Racing Pro N1 (in flat black, they came that way, i didnt paint them) 255/40/17 falken azenis

race tires

18"x9" Work XD9 in bronze with 265/35/18 race tires

snow tires vs street tires

the race tires:

Re: A little story about my car (STI)

over 500 ft/lbs of torque in a 3200 lb car with awd and 255/40/17 sticky rubber all around, with a close ratio 6-speed is quite a rush....

it will still spin all 4 in second just by rolling onto it, but it still more traction than a tradition rwd v8, so you actually go somehwere instad of smokeshows all day long.

inch or a mile brosef.... inch or a mile.....

I have youtube vids under xrocket21

I cant access youtube at work, but if you search, I have some vids of me drag racing and doing donuts on old tires

all of my old setup though, it didnt run long enough for me to take more than two pics, so no vids of that yet.

Theres also a vid of my RC51 on there idling (I was trying to explain to someone what a twin sounded like) to keep it bike related
