Question

iPod content recovery help needed!!!

long story short...

I own two iPods. There is roughly 30 gigs of music between the two, that i do not want to lose. I recently got a new computer and I want to import what's on the iPod units onto the new computer and into Itunes. As soon as I plug the iPod into the new computer, iTunes wants me to reformat the iPod and purge what's currently on there. I no longer have access to the computer that used to house the music that is currently on the iPods.

ps, new computer is pc rather than mac...

Please help a brotha' out...

Doesn't work with Ipod Touch though, hopefully you have Classic.

Re: iPod content recovery help needed!!!

there is no way!

the best you can do if going from mac to pc is find a mac with i tunes upload all your music to the computer and download it all onto one ipod. then reformat the other i pod. that way you dont lose your old stuff, and your ipod will run 100 times better when its not crammed with music.

also i believe its AAC to MP3 or MP4 that is the problem with the format.

although it may be possible with windows installed on a mac to convert between the two. run i tunes in the windows through boot camp or parallels and run the upload from there?

went i went to mac i just erased all my old crap.

Mac formats the iPod differently. If you had PC formatted it, the MAC could still use it, but not the other way around.

What you will have to do is find a MAC, copy all the music off with Yamipod, format it with the PC, then copy the music back on with iTunes.

You're screwed:
iPod: How to determine your iPod's disk format

Unless you can find a mac to dump it to, and then transfer the files to a PC.

This is why I have my complete iTunes library on both a PC and mac. I rip all songs in mp3, not aac and rsync the 2 libraries.

Re: iPod content recovery help needed!!!

Hopefully, none of the music was bought from the iTunes store. If it was you have 2 problems, DRM and the drive formatting. If not, the simplest is to use Yamipod on a borrowed Mac to make a backup. You could also install a HFS partition reader for windows on your new laptop, like HFSExplorer. Or you can boot your laptop from a Ubuntu LiveCD, and then read and write HFS+ partitions.

That has to be the dumbest thing, you basically just want to transfer from one drive to another...somple enough. But some genious at mac decided to make it difficult.

Yeah... that's why I opted not to get an Ipod. All the anti-piracy bullshit pisses me off. I have a Creative Labs Zen and I love the thing. It can act as a jump drive or an mp3, so you can go back and forth whenever you want from any computer.

Yet another reason not to buy an Ipod. I really don't see the appeal of them at all. Granted I use Itunes but instantly convert my songs to MP3. Then all that licensing BS goes away.
