Well, no, not really - the two are entirely different for myriad reasons, but first and foremost, irish haven't been systemically disadvantaged and persecuted, significantly overrepresented in the prison system, and consistently given poor opportunities for education, employment, fair housing, equitable loans, etc, for the last century (alone, excluding distant past), the way blacks and people of color in general have - irish, being non-visible minorities, were seriously disadvantaged during the first quarter + of the 20th century, but through assimilation lost the mark of immigrant, and became part of the general white american public - benefiting from the kind of social development programs like FHA and VA home loans, and the GI bill, the way people of color were largely excluded from. So, no, they're not the same: I'm half irish, and slovak, but telling an irish or slovak joke doesn't offend me per se, because I haven't been socially identified (and persecuted) as being irish or slovak since I was young, haven't been systemically underprivileged due to my Irish roots, nor have I been known first and foremost by the public as an irishman first, and Eli second - this isn't the case a lot of the time for visible minorities. While a lot of culturally identified Irish (or whatever denomination) would take Irish jokes more personally than I would, stereotyping arabs, blacks, asians, etc remains far different in implication and impact most of the time, than simple general stereotyping - case in point, apart from the greater social implications and significance of racialized jokes, let's make it simple - do irish jokes, depending on their severity, offend those of us who are irish here? Maybe, maybe not - ok, does stereotyping blacks over watermelon, welfare, and invoking minstrelsy, offend people here? I sure as hell hope so. The two have different histories, different contexts, and so they're not on equal playing fields.

While both are offensive, it's not actually a double standard, in a similar way as it's not a double standard that it's worse/has greater social force for a man to call a woman a stupid bitch than it is for a woman to call a man a stupid bastard - there's no power dynamic in the second instance, whereas women still make 75 cents to the dollar a lot of the time.

Not interested in starting an argument, institutional racism happens to be a focus of mine and thought I'd give a thought to it. Y'all are welcome to your opinions.

Re: oh my dear god

look. theres certain things that are funny and certain things that arent. not being able to get a job because youre black isnt that funny but saying you cant bet a job BECAUSE youre black and the reality is youre just another n****r (i wont spell it out of respect of other people, not because im afraid to say it) trying to blame everyone else for your own ineptitude is different. guy i work with is from Haiti, hes obviously black. he will straight up tell you that he used to be a n****r. in a gang, in and out of prison, robbery, assault, drugs, GTA, kids with different women. all of it was a life style. then one day he woke up and decided NOT to be a stereotype any longer and got out of Mass and got his shit together...now hes just a guy a work with. i personally HATE n****rs... and you dont have to be black to be one. the excuses of "the man holding them down" is long dead. its an excuse.the only people holding them down is them. products of their environment? possibly. but everyone knows with some effort you can rid yourself of the destructive forces that hinder your well being (drugs, people, environment).
i feel that no one is more racist than black people. i dont mean ALL black people but the average as a whole.

Assuming you (general) don't read my response, just read the abstract of this study about contemporary employment discrimination isolating names alone: entitled, "Are Emily and Greg More Employable than Lakisha and Jamaal?" - from two harvard/MIT econ affiliated researchers/grad students. Findings aren't surprising, if you've read similar things before - just read the abstract, at the least.

http://www.povertyactionlab.com/pape...llainathan.pdf

Like I said, I'm not interested in arguing - this is an academic focus of mine, not something I muse about whenever it's brought up in conversation, so I know my shit - as far as "the myth about the man holding blacks down," that's just not accurate. Yea, a lot of times personal determination and fortitude can help you rise out of poverty or hardship or whatever, but if you actually read the bulk of social theory and facts (read: not conjecture) about contemporary institutional racism, you'd know that there's no such thing as an equal playing field when it comes to current American society. And being of a darker complexion is, in many cases, a severe disadvantage - a statement backed up by decades of polls (gallup, et al), social statistics, and plain observation.

Frankly, everyone knows people of whatever color or creed that have risen against incredible odds, or made significant life-changing decisions based on their own accord - but that's the minority of cases. Once you familiarize yourself with contemporary racial reality in THIS country, it's not a matter of opinion whether people of color face discrimination based on their race; writ large, it's in inarguable fact; trust me, I was as dispassionate as you a while back, before I educated myself (or rather, got educated) about it. I know exactly the kind of mentality (assuming it's what your post indicates) you have, cause I had much the same one. Once I actually learned shit about systemic racism, beyond spouting opinions about OJ or Rodney King or affirmative action, or giving one or two accounts of a few minorities I knew who were on the right track, "so why the fuck can't the rest of them??", I realized how misguided I was.

But like I said, not interested in arguing - IMO, arguments are for shit that has two solidly arguable positions.

Not gonna say any more about it, not appropriate here.

Re: oh my dear god

soap- i read and understand what you are saying. im not saying that it doesnt exist, as im educated on a daily basis by my partner and his experiences past and present. im also not trying to start an argument. i view this as an intelligent conversation (yours higher than mine). its hard not to stereotype when so many fall into it, even if its a snap judgment. like asian kids and spiked hair (no offense to asians), like white trash at wal-mart. i guess what it boils down to is i find it humorous when anyone falls into the stereotype that proceeds them. whether its socially or morally acceptable to others. when i see an asian kid with spiked hair driving some riced out integra ...i laugh. when i see some mexican standing outside the home depot waiting to grab a job or doing landscaping.... i laugh. again when someone is a walking stereotype i cant help but find it amusing.
