plumbing question?

Ok so i had installed a new showervalve and well i am putting up the drywall and i notice there is a black spacer? that does or does not need to be installed?

so i got all the surrounding drywall up and here i am scratching my head because also the handle is gonna stick out quite a bit after. I am sure its not a problem but again does it have something to do with this spacer?

anyone?

Wouldn't that step it out some to be level with whatever tile you put in?

Re: plumbing question?

no tile.

just a surround.

its about 1/16" fiberglass. tile is way too pricy for just adding a shower.

how big is the shower i have some left over tile you can have my man. also you might want to put some form of water barrier on the blue board weather it be a sealer or a mesh membrain to prevent mold.

It looks to me like you have a picture of the jig that comes with a mixing valve, what you are calling the shower valve.

That is used to line up the valve with sheet rock plus tile and serves no purpose after that.

Re: plumbing question?

well it is teh mold and mildew resistant board and i bought 5 tubes of caulking to help seal it all in. the plan was put up the surround and seal the shit out of the edges and mud and paint the upper half about 6 inches or so.

the first time i have had to do a bathroom but the shower is

68" tall 30" deep 5' wide

Re: plumbing question?

the tile i have will cover that. the blue board is mold resistant but not water you need to put some form of a water proofing on before hand. i am in the middle of doing my bathrrom over.

I don't kwon what 2 inches you are speaking of. If you PM me I'll give you my phone number. But basically you leave that piece of plastic on the head. There used to be lines and markings and numbers on the side. When you roughed the plumbing in you rough it so that the front of that plastic would be flush with the finished wall of the shower. The drywall and tile guys use the plastic to build around. When they are done the plumber comes back removes the plastic and finishes his work.

you can get a mesh membrain you ut up like wall paper or a paint that will seal it then put your tile or your fiber glass unit. might be over kill but better safe then sorry

i will get the size of the tile but they are white with a little grey in them i used them to do my floor for the kitchen and hallway.

Re: plumbing question?

the mud and groute for the tile is the cheap part. if you go to the grossmen's bargain outlet you can get some good deals on tile just make sure you buy enought to do the entire job and then some. gone back for more s never going to happen

Re: plumbing question?

I am gonna check back later here. I dont know if moving the valve is possible right now. worse case i put up the surround for now and have the excess valve sticking out. is it just going to be an aesthetic fault?

my brain hurts..........

What he said. You need to move the mixer back or build the wall out 2 inches.
You could put cement board and tile on it and gain an inch.

Greenboard is water resistant not blueboard. Blueboard is for plaster usually.

P.S. Next time You dont know what a part is ask before you cover it up.

Re: plumbing question?

When the handle is mounted on the valve - does it bottom out against the chrome sleeve, or the brass threaded internals? You might be able to pick up some real estate by trimming the chrome sleeve back. Not to sound like a smart ass - But - What do the directions say???

My shower controls came with about 200 extra parts depending on how and what it was supposed to be mounted in...

Re: plumbing question?

Are you talking about the 2" between the handle and the plate? You are supposed to be able to see that chrome sleeve between them. If you bury the valve farther in the wall the screws won't reach the valve to hold the plate on and the handle could rub against the plate. If you want me to move it back the most you would gain would be an inch. I wouldn't charge you for it but there isn't any point in doing it.

Re: plumbing question?

It works! I have thought about it for awhile and its fine. I am gonna stick with the original plan and use the shower liner. already have it and its the easy route.

The handle is fine. thanks for the install B. I got all confuse looking at the directions (pictures ) and figured what the hell did i do wrong. I found the plastic ring and it was all down hill from there.

I am gonna wrap it up tomorrow. I have decided to stick the shower liner.

Now to go to work!

Thanks for the tips and advice everyone. I am all set.

1.5 pint. keep the tiles. I think i am all set.

Re: plumbing question?

Ya that black piece is just a template for when you sheet rock. Some people use it to keep the valve from moving back and forth but I would rather use blocks and clip the pipes to it. If you have any problems with it let me know.

Re: plumbing question?

Water/mold resistant board doesn mean water PROOF. Get a roll on waterproofing material and just cover the board and the flooring with it. Use mesh tape at the joint between the floor and the board.

I would have went with cement board but that stuff can be a pain in the ass to cut and it isn't cheap. You could always pay me to put a fiberglass 2 piece unit in

So you have everything exposed I would move it back, you'll be much happier looking at that thing 365 times a year that way.

p

Oh and run a 2x4 or something behind that and strap the pipes to it. It will make less banging when you turn the water off.
