Its buggier than 2$ whooooah!!!!

found a couple more open source programs last night decided to do the old download thing, since i was working til 5am.

turns out the programs are running all the time and freezing up my computer.

i am sure its a temporary thing but it is not cool when a brand new (well a year old) computer is getting the hiccups.

the open source software is Gimp for the mac. its a free photoshop and it will drain your soul.

I have no idea what the problem is. However it has nothing to do with the program you downloaded being "open source". Open source simply means that in addition to the program, the programmer has provided source code for you to download if you wish to examine and/or modify the inner workings of the software.

Contrary to your post, this practice actually has the effect of creating more stable software, as it allows though who are able/inclined to do so to find bugs, fix them, and then submit their bug fixes to the creator for inclusion in a later release. Something you cannot do with closed source software.

this i already know. its the software that gave my computer the slow down.

I already have open office (which works great BTW) but i was trolling around for a photoshop and (one of the bugs in the software slowed down my computer

now since i know absolutely nothing about code i cant fix the bug.

if you want to take your time to research and fix the bug, have fun.

I wasnt saying hey dont download open source software, i just warned people that it can have problems and there is a reason its free

this was for a mac brotha, not sure if the same problems will arise with windows.

i also downloaded it for OS X tiger also since leapord is the new OS then fixes for tiger may have fallen to the wayside

now thats F'd up. I read reviews that its a good program before i did the install.

I tried to run it and it never opened. it just slowed my computer down. so i shut down my computer and rebooted and it was acting like it did when i first tried to open it.

I deleted and re-installed the program and still nothing. other than when i deleted it my computer ran smoother.

I chalked it up as a bug and deleted the program. Ill look into it more when i have the time.

to be honest at first i thought i downloaded a virus til it cleared up upon deleting the file.



sucks too, i dont want to pay for no stinkin photoshop.

Open Source software FTW!!!!!

I have been running open office since december of last year and besides the printing problems and the shortcuts sucking ass. its great. I do all my work documentation with it and the ability to save in almost every kind of available file for windows and macs is awesome.

I highly reccomend it to anyone not wanting to shell out 150-400 butcks for microsoft office.

the only issue i have had with it

printer

can only print 1 copy at a time

shortcuts

the macs shortcuts dont always correspond with open office shortcuts (IE windows shortcut keys)

Macros in excel files

don't always translate from microsoft excel to open office. I have lost data but nothing major.

If you lose power the program auto saves every 10 minutes and can recover files previously thought lost.

I love it. compatibility becomes and issue when i am the only mac in the company but overall its a very smooth transition between the 2 and has more pro's than con's including the cost savings.

Crack open terminal.app next time you think your machine is being hammered. Enter top -o cpu and it'll list the top cpu hogs. That'll give you a start to figure out what's broken.

Gimp on OS X is still using X11 for it's interface, so it has some overhead compared to a native Aqua app on OS X, if there is something buggered with your or Leopard's in general X11 setup, that would cause Gimp grief.

Oh, and looking at the community Gimp packages for OS X...

The X11 package you can find on a OS X 10.5.0 install disk is too old to run GIMP (it will crash), and it can't be updated through software update. See the installation manual for more information.

So... that looks to be the trouble, go to How to install GIMP on mac OS X 10.5.2 or greater to see how to fix it.
