Mopar is back!

I thought this was the coolest thing to come from the 1960's in ages. Dodge and fast cars aren't dead yet!

I've never been a huge muscle car fan, but that's pretty awesome. All manufacturers should take a cue from Mopar and offer factory lightweights (at a discount too). Some of us would rather have light and fast than heavy and slow.

Re: Mopar is back!

A dedicated drag car should go in the 10's, or it's a joke IMO. I don't think that car would do it without some spray. It's a really cool concept, but how do you justify it when there's cars out there that will run the same times, and drive to the track....with the ac on.....while getting 25 mpg. I put my camaro in a barn after I drove a buddies buick grand national, my drag car is also a joke.

I'm done with cars. Have been for years...

If I got back into cars, it would be a forced induction import... My brother's 2000 RS (after sinking a small fortune into it.) Weighs about 2600lbs and makes 500hp at the wheels... All 4 wheels...

I know I'd never spend $30k+ on a 3-400hp, non-streetable mopar, so I'm clearly not in the demographic

will people actually buy these things?

Less and less people will be in line for one of those.
The next Camaro will be a huge flop for GM unless gas prices drop 50%.

I think people would buy them, there's a lot of wealthy drag racers and car people out there. Who knows, the car could be worth 10x the selling price or more in fifteen years.

Chevy is talking about putting their 2.0 260hp turbo motor in the Camaro for 2010-2011, I'd like to see it happen.

Re: Mopar is back!

Chevy's history with a turbocharged anything is not very good at all.
Putting a 4 banger under the hood of a heavy car does not make sense to me.
But, considering fuel, etc. perhaps it would sell a few extra per year.
Reminds me of the Mustang SVO with a 2.3 turbo under the hood.

Re: Mopar is back!

geeeeez...I think the new Challenger is sick. Ya its not a 10 second drag car, but it can be street driven and brought to be a competitive STREET car at the 1/4 mile. Lately, with the first 08 srt-8 modells, some dealers are selling them for 10-15K over sticker price...so ya they are selling ok I would say.
Furthermore, all Dodges do not suck, my truck will run you down if you say that

The turbo four they have now is actaully a pretty damn good motor. This is coming from someone who despises pretty much anything domestic.

Sounds like you still think in cylinders. Twenty years ago that made sense, not now. Power output of four bangers is where V8's were only a few years ago. The generals turbo 4 is putting out 260hp & 260 ftlbs. The outgoing camaro's V-6 was only making 200hp/225tq. Heck even the ole LT1 was only making 275hp/325tq. The old camaro weighed in at ~3300lbs, the 2010 will be a bit heavier in the 3700 range. Seems like that turbo four would easily dust the old V6 even with the weight penalty. They never had any trouble selling the old V6 model.

Ohh and back on subject... Unless dodge starts coming out with some small cars their done. As much as a car like this gets people talking about dodge. Nobodies buying them. They have the worst CAFE rating of all the big manufacturers. Its going to come around and bite them in the ass real soon if it isnt all ready.

When a company starts up with lifetime power train and $2.99 gas you know they are grasping for straws.

Yes, but the car we're talking about can't be driven on the street.

Re: Mopar is back!

def saw one down in key west the other day...looked and sounded pretty sick....

I use to have a sonic blue 03 cobra that put down 483 rwhp and ran 12.1 on street tires and that had about 10K sank into in (mostly suspension and a few engine things)

but it got 9mph

ah right...I must have misread the original release notes I saw. Still, who would drag race a 'stock' car competitively? hehe

I know a guy with a Ram pickup running 12's (NA, no nos/sc/turbo), he has tons of mods/weight savings, a 383 stroked Hemi and still uses it as a daily driver and gets 20mpg on a light foot cruising, so its not impossible to get it running fast as hell. I guess everything comes down to weight/HP

Oh, I understand engine dynamics just fine and keep up with specs. etc. The new turbo from GM is just that, new. I admire their efforts but remain cautious going forward with this engine from a company that has had trouble with "halo" engines in the past. If that turbo is well engineered I'm sure it will fill a market demand for more hp/less fuel.

I think if GM had worked at the Quad series they would likely have an engine to fill the void rather than a "new" turbo.

Well, you may know these two engines not actually made by GM.

1997-present Fiat JTD (marketed as EcoTec CDTi or TiD depending on brand; used via a sharing agreement between Fiat and GM)

2000s-present VM Motori RA 420 (marketed as EcoTec CDTi or VCDi depending on brand)

I can not come up with any large scale production turbocharged engines from GM with the exception of a Corvair from 1968, a few Quads ( where are they now? ) and that beast of a V6 in the Buick.

Re: Mopar is back!

As far as GM, I was going to add that the gmc syclone/typhoons were pretty friggin sick for their time with a 4.3 v6 (really good motor) with a turbo, but I just looked up information on that configuration and it turns out they used a mitsubishi turbo I guess.
