Why Can't I find a job??????Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN ) for 6am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA ) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG ). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA ), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE ) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA ) After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA ) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO ) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN ) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA ) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY ) filled it with GAS (from Saudi Arabia ) and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.. At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his Computer (made In Malaysia ), Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL ) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE ) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA ), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in AMERICA .. |

Re: Why Can't I find a job??????You may wish to amend your list. "Canada remained the largest exporter of total petroleum in May, exporting 2.265 million barrels per day to the United States, which is a decrease from last month (2.534 thousand barrels per day). The second largest exporter of total petroleum was Saudi Arabia with 1.604 million barrels per day." |

Re: Why Can't I find a job??????If you want these items made in the USA as a consumer you will have to be willing to absorb the cost of our federal and state minimum wages, higher safety standards, higher materials standards and higher quality control standards.... and everyone bitches about inflation and higher costs... just imagine how much things would cost if they weren't manufactured overseas by children... manufacturing in America was killed by higher than acceptable labor and materials cost. |

Re: Why Can't I find a job??????The only reason the domestics build cars in Canada is because the federal government offered up millions in incentives to build plants. Gm and co. moved a few products north years ago. The new Camaro is being built in Canada? |

Re: Why Can't I find a job?????? Cheaply, but poorly. Of course, the same was said about Japanese cars in the 70s. We still have an edge in IT/Engineering but much like the auto world the asian markets are nipping at our heels and competing on price. This will get their foot in the door and soon they'll have the experience necessary to compete on merit as well. My generation grew up with computers and electronics in this country. Our equivalents in India/China did not. But this is changing. Their engineers and IT personnel right now are long on academics and drive but short on practical knowledge and experience. In two generations they'll have closed the gap. Fortunately I should be ready to retire about then. |

don't major companies care more about making money than giving their fellow Americans a job? I'm sure if Joe Smith, 10 years from now, was a vice president of any of the companies that made those products, he wouldn't feel inclined to move labor to the US so his friends from highschool have a job. |

Re: Why Can't I find a job??????Take a closer look and follow the money. Yes - the plants are in the US and use US labor. Almost every sub-assembly or component that is supplied comes from a Japanese owned supplier - their plant may be located on US soil - but the money gets sent back to Japan. |

Money get sent everywhere these days. The thirst for oil in the USA is a windfall for any country that exports here. T-shirts or PC's the money flows thru different channels than a few years ago. I don't think the domestic auto industry is going to survive it's current "issues" much longer. Someone will fall and the remaining two will hope for the scraps. ![]() |

Re: Why Can't I find a job??????I think you can attribute alot of this to 'greed' or not looking into the future. Lots of (us) companies have done what can to get money quickly and not look into the future. Good example, is even machine shops/scrap metal. There are Chinese companies that came over and offered alittle more for peoples scrap metal and just gained more and more and more....and guess what, they can control/handle more and more of the market for raw materials/machining. |

Re: Why Can't I find a job??????We are all missing a point a here. Yes the usual stuff we use and consume and see is being outsourced. I am Indian and I love my country and I think although the tech support and Call Centers haev brought in jobs and money to a lot of people, I still think tht to be a great economy we have to follow what US did in the past. First US built the infrasturture - roads, electricity plants, industries...once they were establised the automobile era came in. The big three changed the way people moved around. Then they moved to high tech. Now they are moving to healthcare and research, I think its a a gradual development process. Why retain manuyfacturing when service industry is more profitable? Why provide services when doing research has better impact on economy in long run? Think about it. I think US still leads in terms of research and development and they shoudl keep that edge. Now countries have to work together! You do research, Japanese would build it and we Indians would take care of tech support and provide the software. How does that sound? |

Re: Why Can't I find a job??????Tree Huggers Unions Democratic Elitists Foreign Dumping I had to close my company that had 16 workers at one time. The Chinese government lent granted the money to their mill. In the end they would deliver a truck load my type finished wire to the customer for less money then my raw materials. Note total labor cost of this product was 8 cents and transport for China was 11 cents. DUURRR?. Your Govrnmnt is on the case though almost 5 years after the last bulk nail plant was put out of business in the USA now there is a 25% tarrif. The result is that no jobs were saved and you get to pay 25% more for tarrif that are confiscated by the USA govrnmnt. Wait for Obama Pelosi Reed and their tree huggers to finish you off. Then he can be president of the World |

The burger you buy at McDonalds comes from the clear cut brazillian rainforest. The beans from the Dunkin' coffee come from outside of the US [My guess Columbia]. A lot of the goods which are "Made in America" are compiled from goods from other countries. I work in American manufacturing and am sad to say that a lot of the goods we manufacture from imported raw materials. I'm not picking on you Kamikaze - just illustrating a point. I've been trying as of late to buy as many American products and it is soooo hard. |
