Those engines ROCK

My dad worked at GE on those engines. It was his final spec that certified whether the engine worked as rated HP output.

Those plants (power plants) ROCK.

I was thinking of picking up a couple of the new JSF planes. Maybe one for me and one for the wife. They look pretty cool and you don't need the hassle of building a runway...you can just take off vertically from your front lawn.
Plus they have REAL motors in them...Pratt & Whitney...

Is that the one that won the JSF "bake off" and is going to go into production? F-35? F-XX whatever?

IMO that downward nozzle in the back just looks "wrong"... you know that whole thing that airplanes, like bikes, have to look sexy.

The other one would have kicked "their" asses too, and so will the F-22, and so will the F-16, F-16, F-18, etc..

Especially since "They" is now a guy in a pickup truck with an RPG and a .50 cal, or a guy in street clothes with explosives tucked under his shirt.

Yup...it's going into production now.

The nozzle is only pointing down when doing a vertical take-off or landing. There's also a shaft-driven fan in the nose area that provides lift for the front of the jet. (notice the air intake hatches by the canopy). When it transitions from vertical flight to horizontal flight, it's an incredible sight...a real engineering marvel. The nozzle rotates back straight, the hatches shut, and the thing takes off like a rocket. It's amazing.

V/STOLs are kewl!

I remember the 1st time I ever saw a Harrier (otherwise a fugly airplane). I'd been in the USAF about 6 mo. when the base I was @ had its annual air show. I'd never even heard of V/STOL aircraft before... and when the AV-8B did its demo for the day, it blew my mind. came flying down the flightline, slowed, stopped, swung back & forth... then flew backwards!

Friggin' things are the LOUDEST thing I've ever heard. Very cool planes though. Lost alot of test pilots getting to that point though.

guess ya never heard a B52 @ TRT, huh? all the time I lived in the barracks @ Barksdale AFB, I never needed an alarm clock... between the BUFFs and the old KC-135 tankers w/ water injection having their first launches around 5 AM, even a sound sleeper like me got all the wake-up call he needed...
