1st off--I've crashed MY, err,Erin's sv650 a couple times, once at higher speed once at low speed + aside from dents not much damage! (except to my head---fuckin motards)

2nd-i've crashed my fzr400 multiple times + that fukker just keeps going,+ going,+going etc.
extremely fun bike

3rd--I told ya kid, afta I win the 1st 3 protwins races, I'll sell my gs500 to ya to eat up all those EX crapsticks!!!
(unless I decide to win EVERY protwin race this upcoming season!)
that may be a 2006 goal?--that's 1 reason I need to follow you a bit Paul!

seems like i am looking at the following choices:

Choice A: get a super twin (or whatever the stock class is) ex500, do alot of track days, go for the track school, start doin some practices, and then try the races.

-or-

Choice B: get an SV, preferably with alot of race add ons like suspenion and such, street ride it until i feel comfortable to go to track days, then track school, then racing.

both have pros- and cons- i see. If the ex500 is easy enough to learn on where i can skip the street part and go right to the track then good. but if a good amount of street time is needed before hitting the track, then i'll get an SV. however, you guys say the SV races are pretty competative so i'm not sure about the whole SV thing now. a bit will depend on how well i do at motocross, which i will use to guage how fast i can learn something i've never done before. if that makes any sense at all.

sorry for all the newb questions and such guys, but i really appreciate you guys helpen me out.

I started racing at Loudon this year on an EX. Though most of the year was a learning experience for me, I had a great time and became competitive during the second half of the season. My son got his license in September at 14 on an EX, and did 1:30's in his only race of the year. The EX guys are a good group, and give advice/support freely. The only advice I would give about buying an EX is get a '94 or later model with the 17" wheels if possible. There are more options at the track for tires. You are limited with the 16" wheels on what you can run, and I don't know if you can get tires for them at the track without ordering them.

+1 for the ex500 and the pt class. lot's of great guys that will go out of their way to help you if you need anything for the bike. Last year was my first year, finally got a PT legal ex500 towards the end of the season and was in the 1:28's, 1:29's. Lot's of fun to make a slow bike go relatively fast.

Hardcore, I know you like talkin smack, but you have an uphill battle on the lowly GS

The FZR is a rocketship compared to the GS. Hell, an EX is a rocket comparatively!!!

I'll drag you around a bit on a friday or a lot at trackday, but you might want to start working on it NOW. Mapping the track according to Keith Codes advice in TOTW2 is a good place to start.

I agree with Paul. The GS will not compete with the EXs.

I race an MZ Scorpion against the EXs and it is competitive, but for some reason isn't allowed in the P- Twins class. Maybe because it's a single? :-)

I did race against EXs (and motards) in other classes and I don't care what people might say, the lightweight classes are fun and challenging with similar corner speeds as the big boys.

that is one of my goals for next year---if I get my corner speed faster like the 125 guys, I will MAKE that slow-ass GS compete + beat the EX's!

I have TOTW 1 but I'm not sure if I have 2

+ ya, I love talkin smack-----it's like putting out a challenge to myself to live up to that shit as much as possible

Actually, a good rider on an inferior bike can still win in the novice class. So, the GS might produce wood for you ...for a while.

Corner speed is where it's at on every bike! You don't see Wood pointing and shooting no matter what the mags say. That's a relative thing and only a factor once corner speed has been MAXED.

I think under powered bikes are the best way forward in learning to corner fast, and the GS fits the bill!

The 125s are a different story altogether. They don't really fit in a comparison of ther small bikes. 125s generally record the highest cornerspeeds of any 2 wheeled vehicle at a given track.

you would when he rode the 1k.

When I was playing backmarker with the SBK guys, it was wierd seeing their riding style up close on the track.

They'd go WTO almost to the edge of the track, park it, turn and light it up. You'd be sure they were gonna run off the track, but they don't. They run super short gearing to get the acceleration after turn in. It explains all the wheelies seen and such.

thats what Hayden said MotoGP was like when he first arrived. point and shoot. but now its emphazing corner speed a la 125/250. i find it alot more fun to watch guys dirttrack the turns tho. i think if the tire companies would focus on a tire specificaly for it, then the style wouldn't die out as fast as Gary McCoys motogp caree.

Yep, the point and shoot riders are dying on the vine in MotoGP. Look at Colin Edwards results for proof. Also, note how well the 250 group who just stepped up have gone in their first test!!!

It's probably down to all the controls they are developing for getting the power down in a user friendly way that is killing the point and shooters. It will always be faster to corner faster, until they straighten out the tracks!!!

I raced around with Kevin Kennedy at the end of the season. That dude's friggin MZ is FAST. I had a hell of a time finding a way around him. Lord knows I wasn't catching him out of corners, that single thumps

You know.. if I was 16 and wanted to get into roadracing.. I'd apply to be on MTV MADE. That show's awesome and it'd be great to see a young kid wannabe roadracer get on it. Do it.. do it...

Yeah, well Kennedy's MZ is built. Most built MZs have about 65-70 hp, whereas my stock motor is making about 50 hp. He is about a second faster than me, but not always able to get past.

BTW, he's one of those riders who has been an "amateur" for about 3 seasons, even though he wins almost every race he enters. Where does the automatic bump up rule fit with him??? Come up with the big boys K.

3 years? Hah. http://www.ama-cycle.org/amrace/1997/gcrrinfo.html Check out who's in 5th place in Amateur Heavyweight Thunderbike (seems to be only Experts and Amateurs back then). I know according to the LRRS Amateur Upgrade stats he's done 85+ races. Insanity. I've done 13 total and I'm already trying to get out of Amateur

Kevin got 2nd down at the Race of Champions this year so I think that equates a automatic upgrade to Expert according to the CCS Rulebook.

I figured that MZ was a Galen special. Motor is probably worth a small fortune but it sure does run nicely. I'll have to come check your MZ out next season. Neat bikes. My buddy Joel down on the Vineyard has a street one.
