hey guys, i was refered to this place by a13x, and i've already introduced myself in the introduction section.

I'm 16, currently a dirt rider, who would like to try road racing. What is loudon like? i really don't know anything about the track, or the people, or what the experiance will be like. I'd like to try a few track days there, is tonystrackdays the only option? and i know i need to take the penguin race school course, but i'm unsure of how much experiance is needed before taking the superbike school.

any info would be appreciated. i'd like to get to know the guys who frequent the place. thanks in advance.

You should definately do the track day first. See if it is for you.

tony's is a good place to start.

Hook up with someone here to go through the school and race weekend. There are a lot of aspects to this such as paperwork, timing, which classes to race in etc. Being with an experienced racer cannot compare to trying this on your own.

You can get alot of questions answered and opinions here on the forum for sure.
I think you already have the right idea....do a trackday and maybe come up to the track for a weekend and check it out first hand. Alot of us here on the forum race up there and all kinda set up in one big area.

I can't agree more w/ Chris & Dan (Naz & Legal). Definitely look into www.tonystrackdays.com and give it a shot, you won't regret it. Come up to NHIS for a race weekend or two as well & hang out w/ the guys, it's as much of a blast as it is a learning experience

Yea there is a quite a few under-20 racers up at LRRS from what I've seen. As these guys mentioned, coming up to the track for the April (which is normally bad weather) or May races and hanging out, checking out the scene, asking questions, and getting a feel would probably be a worthwhile experience. Give you a better idea of what's going on before you show up with a bike and cash in hand saying 'uh.. lets race'. Most of us had spent some time up there as Pit Crew or Spectators before we got our there racing.

For you and your situation. A few trackdays prior to the races would be a good thing as wel.

That is correct.

The Penguin school is run by Eric and Jeff Wood. LRRS is run by, Hmmm let me see, Oh yeah, Eric, Jeff, Jerry Wood and some old guy.

The one in Homestead is run by Eric, Jeff, and Jerry Wood. They are one in the same. Soooo, if you have a choice TAKE THE ONE IN S. FLORIDA.

I think Eric, Jeff and Jerry are the most approachable riders in the business.

a13x, I think, is a penguin instructor. Take advantage, ask as much as you can as it benifits nestreetriders to have this communication going.

Presently I think we bring more riders to LRRS than ony one organization out there.

"we" as in NESR? I'd have to say it does seem that way, doesn't it? There's a good amount of racers at LRRS that have direct ties w/ NESR either through NESR membership & participation in the forum, or good friends of alot of the guys that are on here

There's ALOT of guys on here that you can draw ALOT of knowledge from. I'm a firm believer that I wouldn't be 1/2 as educated about riding and racing as I am w/o the members of NESR... and I'm still a "newb" compared to alot of guys on here, still learnin a lot from em each time I go to the track or hang out w/ em.

You should ride enough to feel comfortable with others around you. Needless to say, some degree of competence is expected.

The school is designed for street riders, that is to say, Penguin encourages street riders to participate even if you do not plan on becomming a licensed rider, they are out to increase everyone's awareness and skills.

Tony's track days are the same in that respect.

There are different classes, so you won't be out there with the real fast guys.

Taking the Penguin school will qualify you to enter any Thursday and/or Friday practice. After you take the school you must complete your rookie race; three laps without crashing, and register for one race. Then you will have your racing license.

What bike do you plan on using?

Street licenced through MSF back in '01, but i didn't really start getting into it till i got my first bike in May of '04... Three months later the guys on here convinced me to do a trackday & i've never regretted it. Since then i've gained a WEALTH of knowledge through these guys and a ton of experience through many more trackdays and group rides... I'll be riding at VIR for the second time in March of '06, getting my CCS license through Cornerspeed while i'm there & will start racing an EX500 at NHIS shortly there after.

If you wanna get into street riding, track riding & eventually road racing, do yourself a favor... listen to the advice you get here... trust me, I did.

Pretty much everything Legalspeed said is spot on except..

Jeff, Eric, and Jerry don't have diddly to do with running LRRS. Jerry is the Saftey Director for LRRS but that basically is a consultant position, don't deal with the direct control. Does the Wood family have a large amount of influence at LRRS, well yes. Any family with a racing pedigree like that and ties to the track for 30 years is obviously going to have some clout. Luckily as Dan said, you couldn't ask for a more professional, approachable, nice, and knowledgable bunch of riders.

Florida Schools: The Penguin Schools in Florida are just a venue for riders in the South East US to get a racing license. Many of the Racing Schools in the country tour around the US and offer schools at a myraid of tracks. Penguin mainly operates out of NHIS however but does do some Schools and Trackdays in the Florida area (where the CCS races have been taking them for some time).

I'm not officially a Penguin Instructor, but they did ask me to Guest Instruct at the last trackday of the year. I guess I didn't screw up too bad because I was able to work with the Basic School the following Friday (which was very cool). Technically I can't become a fulltime Instructor until I go Expert, but I'll be up there for all next years Trackdays and most Friday's 'helping out'. Riding in the Novice Group shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Penguin is a Race School--not really a Superbike school--Keith Code runs California Superbike School--you confused me x2468, I thought you were going to take that--good school though--I got to crash,i mean ride,one of their bikes

well, i have been planning i using an Sv650s. but i've recently found they have a history of crank and rod problems (or something like that). i've seen alot of guys here race the Ex500s. they seem pretty cheap to buy and popular (altho no where near as good looking, no offense )

I may be incorrect in saying this, but I "think" it's the other way around. I've seen/heard of Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more problems with ex500's over the SV's at the track.

maybe clapped out ex500's but the 03-05 SV650s had a design flaw with the crank. They didn't include enough tolerance and while they work fine on the street, under race scenarios can toss rods ands crank a lot.
