Question

What makes motards fun?

Two race weekends ago I had an "I hate motards" sticker on the tail of my bike. I removed it for the last event, as they look more and more fun every time I see them. I've been thinking about getting one as a dual sport/street bike.

Maybe someone who races one in the novice class would like to trade bikes for a practice session so I can see how fun they really are. Maybe I'll hate it, hopefully.

Easy to ride (like you can ride all day and it hurts less)
Easy to go 'quick on'
You can make lots of mistakes and it's okay.
The bumps at Loudon disappear.
They accelerate and brake extremely quickly.
You can ride them with two very different styles.
You can put dirt wheels on and ride in the dirt.
Crash well
Tires last a long time.

cons
--
Straightaway are very boring
Outside of Loudon they aren't the 'quick' ticket
Tend to blow up

I started doing it a few years ago just cuz it was something 'different' to try.

Recently, its more due to the fact that tires last forever and they don't break stuff when you crash em. (thus extremely cheap to race)

Good points, I added them on.

I sort of want a motard so I can race... Supermoto, like dirt / jumps / pavement.

It's great practice!!! They teach you how to control a bike that's wiggling and wobbling. Also, helps with getting on the gas early and on the brakes way late. Now, it doesn't even phase me when the 600 get all out of shape.

Plus, the biggest reason of all, MOTARDS PISS OFF 125 GUYS

Try riding a KLR fast

Doesn't your blanket statement also cover racing an EX?

They are very easy to ride quickly, and have LOTS of suspension, which rocks at a bumpy ass track like Loudon.

Come by the Low Down area next weekend and you can take her out for a rip as long as you take it for a race I'm not in obviously.

If I run this weekend, it'll be the GTL My best time was a .26 so you got me beat already, plus my KTM woodsbike doesn't have the bark of it's MX brother

One session on R7's YZ450 at VIR is what got me addicted. I thought the whole thing was a stupid by-product of people who couldn't figure out how to ride a sportbike, but grew up riding in the dirt.

Then I went out on the motard and did a better lap time than I could pull on my R1, at a horsepower-friendly track.

I'm glad you enjoyed the ride, but VIR isn't exactly a hp friendly track. Its too tight, twisty and narrow. Aside from the straight being boring, motards at VIR are fun.

I've only ever ridden a bike on two tracks; that long ass straight with a big f'n kink in it = hp track to me.

I can see where the motard would enlighten the literbike crowd to the benefits of lightweight bikes, but there are other lightweights that are even more fun. I've ridden motards a bit at Loudon, and while fun, I still find them awkward and ill handling compared to the 125. I suspect a Hawk would be another fun lightweight, though not light enough!

when i was contemplating what to buy as a race bike i looked at the factors that effected me the most...cost & fun. Dollar for dollar i get more fun out of my motard than i could out of a sportbike. I can race it in a good amount of classes at LRRS. Then i can toss the the dirty wheels on it for some weekend off roading. They crash better than anything on the track. And over the winter im gonna make mine street legal so i can be a hooligan legally. Besides riding a motard makes you feel like a pirate.....Arrrggh!
