School Bus Purchase Opportunity

I never thought this would come across me, but it has. I have the opportunity to buy a 1976 school bus. Its refurnished with a full kitchen setup (full size fridge), bathroom, paint, wired throughout, 25' awning, etc... price... $2000.

What do you guys think?

Hey OX.. might be time to claim 'School Bus Parking Only'.

Probably selling it so cheap being a 1976, it's probably a gas engine and gets 3 or 4 mpg

As far as I know, nothing's wrong with it. Runs strong and is used pretty regularly. Most likely does get sh** for gas mileage, but so doesn't my truck and trailer.

Is this the one that has been on Craigslist for a while? If so, it is gas, I already emailed the guy a few weeks ago. Looks decent though if you have a place to park it!

I think Oxx said something about the gearing being too low.

You may be able to install some kind of overdrive.

I too would opt for the Shasta McNasty, she's in fantastic shape!

They're designed and geared for driving around town, that's why they are better on fuel around town

I've tried the overdrive route in a older vehicle before (remember the mofobambualance? ) and it made no difference at all. Mine was only a little 1 ton box truck and it got 6mpg on the highway and I'd assume if it's gas, it probably has close to the same cid engine (mine was 454)

How could the gearing not matter?

It's the wind resistance at speed. Your engine RPM may be lower on the highway but you'll still be on the gas just as hard, if not more because now you're not in the "powerband" of the motor.
I was shocked when I did this with my ambulance, I dropped 1200 rpm's on the highway with overdrive vs the 3spd it had and I got the same fuel mileage. The motor works much harder at highway speeds in overdrive

You would need to find out what it has for a rear end and change the gearing to get more speed and less drag... you don't want to go with too tall of gears though if it is lugging alot you'll smoke your tranny very quickly.. they did this at my old work with one of our Tractors they would only do about 55 at redline going down hill and with no trailer on so they changed the rear end gearing ..

It's a school bus, not a Prius.

yeah the rear end would have to be changed. mine does about 70.. but it cruises pretty good at 55-60. really depends on your route to the track. we altered ours to avoid the big hills and stop and go and it seems to be working out

There's lot of great information here. Definitely, news to me. This is not the one on Craigslist. The guy that offered it to me just through in a trailer too if I want it. If I don't buy it, everything's going up for sale somewhere.

Oxx, looks to be the same size as yours.

for $2K it seems worth it... especially with a trailer. do you need the trailer or is the bus set up like toy hauler so you can put bikes in the back?

Supposedly the bed can be moved and bikes can be rolled in just like yours. The bus is supposedly set to pull the trailer too.
