The Oreo Report: How I beat Jeff Wood & Mike Martire

well, as usual, another weekend full of ups & downs... luckilly this time it was full of more ups.

Woke up Saturday morning at my place & my first thought was "why the fuck is it light out?" I had my alarm clock set for 5am so I could get up, pack a few more things, get some breakfast in me & head to the track... well apparently I completely slept through it or it's broken cuz when I looked at the clock is was almost 8am...

Anyway, got to the track around 10 & obviously missed practice.

First race was race 3a, GTL. Got a semi-decent start but people are alot better at starts in AM than they are in NV so I wasn't able to make much headway. I took it pretty easy the first couple laps since this was the first time I rode the bike since my highside in 12 last race weekend & wasn't sure if anything was tweaked that I didn't know about.

It felt alright & I picked up the pace a little & settled into a decent groove. Apparently it was too decent cuz i went from doing 1:26's to 1:28's by the end of the race and my last lap was a 1:30.7 ... I was absolutely EXHAUSTED and I could hardly pull my brake lever anymore. Tom Joyce and Biggity both caught me w/ a few laps left & I was unable to re-pass. I started good, top 10 going into turn 1, but finished friggin 21st. Not too happy w/ the second half of the race, TOTALLY didn't pace myself for the shape I was in

Second race, race 11, Lightweight Sportsman. Felt much better but still didn't get down to the times I wanted. My best was a 1:26.1 which i was happy w/, but was hoping for a 1:25. Finished 7th to end the day.

shit, gotta get ready for work... i'll finish this up later.

The Oreo Report: How I beat Jeff Wood & Mike Martire

Aight, now for how I beat Jeff & Mike... but i'm only posting this cuz Mike said "Oh man, we're gonna be readin bout this ALL over the net"

I beat Jeff.... with a pair of Kings on the river & I bluffed Mike with a 2, 4 off suit

Saturday night I got a call from Alex, said he was down in the Penguin garage playin poker w/ Jeff & some folks... Mike, Jeff & his girlfriend Jackie, Bruce the announcer and Cathy, the "grid lady". So when we got back to the track I headed down there to hang out for a bit...

When I got there Alex was just about outta money & once he was done he finally convinced me to jump in his spot. I figured what the hell, it's the last race weekend of the year & losin 20 bucks to these guys wouldn't be so bad... So I buy in & throw down the only 20 bucks I had left in my wallet. Turns out I got a good run of beginners luck cuz I walked in there w/ 20 & walked out w/ JUST a couple bucks more I kinda told Alex I'd give him 1/2 my winnings when I was up like 20 or 30 bucks, but by the time I walked outta there I was up 130 & there's no way I'm givin that dirtbag 65 bucks

There were quite a few BIIIIIIG MONEY HANDS and I got the better half of a couple of em. At one point I was up probably close to 200 bucks. It was definitely a good time.

Anyway, back to racing.

Sunday morning I entered Ultralight Superbike at the last minute. Started in the last row and got a crappy start. Served as the kaboose for a little bit then caught up to a few people & finished 12th outta 17. Woulda finished lucky 13th, but Gino unfortunately got taken out in 11/11a... he was able to get back up though & finished 13th about 5 seconds behind me.

Production twins.. the main event... It was gonna be a damn good battle and I knew it from the get-go. With Biggity picking up the pace to match my times in GTL and my battles w/ Tom Joyce back when we were in novice & earlier in the weekend I knew it was gonna be tough.

I got a good start and got ahead of Tom. I put my head down but was STILL tenative getting on the gas in some places, mainly 12 where I highsided last race weekend.

There were a few times where I could literally see Tom's shaddow creeping up on me, but I held him at bay for most of the race. A couple times he almost came up alongside going into turn 3 but I'm pretty confident on the brakes there & was able to keep him from out-braking me.

I think it was lap 5 or 6 where I caught up to an expert on an EX and had a tough time getting past him. Couldn't pass him in 8, 9 or going into 11 where I really should have tried to make a pass on the outside... I lost my concentration cuz I knew I shoulda gone for it in 11 & because of that I blew my turn-in for 11a which skrewed up my drive outta 12. That of course me unable to get catch him & get around him going into 1, 1a or 2, which was BAAAAAAD with Tom right on my heels. I was determined to get around him going into 3, but so was Tom... We went into the braking zone THREEEEEE FRIKKIN WIDE with me in the middle.... it was INTENSE! I conceded the spot & got pushed wide by Tom and the expert was able to tuck behind me and beat me to turn 4. I recovered quickly & got a good drive up turn 4 and re-passed him by the bowl, but by then Tom was a good second in front of me and I wasn't able to catch him by the finish.

It was a great race, I dipped back into the 1:25's (still a whole second off my personal best) and I got my first Amateur wood with a 3rd.

All in all, it was a pretty good way to end the season. I wanna thank every single person that's helped me along the way, but if I named you all this thread would be about 5x's as long All the Low-Down guys, my fellow Cheap Bastids, Tom and Conor Joyce, Mike Brayton, Brendan Guy, BJ Worsham, Dana Temple, Johnny Valvestem and everyone else at the track, thank you all... I couldn't do this w/o you guys.

Dan, I still haven't forgotten about your oil

Cathy is the 'grid lady' also of Dunbar's Ducati.
Yea that was a fun night. I ended up owing Jeff $40.. whatever, few bucks more than I owed him already for my FMF exhaust. Basically Mike McDermott and myself got the shit kicked out of us at the poker table so we drank lots of Amstel's instead.

You owe me some beers and a burger bitch.
