I never knew you could do partial days. I only have 1 race on Saturday (that may change when I bump to AM, but I'll figure something out).

Yeah, Clayton, your schedule for AM will be flip flopped... I used to do 1 race Sat, then 2 on Sun, now it's the other way around, unless i choose to do ULSB as well on Sunday.

And when you race and cornerwork, you are not at the mercy of anyone's schedule but your own. If you need 2 races before your race to get ready, that is when you leave to go back to your pits. My team mate used to bring her race bike with her to her corner, and throw on her leathers and cruise to the pre grid during the cool off lap of the ending race! That is not for everyone!

I am not comfortable running out on a hot track. I didn't think it would bother me, but it scared the hell outta me when I was first confronted with having to do it! It doesn't matter, though, as you are just as needed for "pushing" and clean up. Whatever your comfort level.

I know I need at least 2 races previous to my own to get ready. I have not cornerworked this year, and truthfully I have been getting bored on Saturday with only 1 race. So next year I'm up for more corner working!

Be warned that many here also VOLUNTEER many man-hours to cornerworking so that ALL the racers (and fans) can have the opportunity to further enjoy the experience.

Having someone, some of the time, is better than not having annyone at all.
Personally? I'll ride with one person in the treehouse. If I see someone that needs help, I'll pull off the track and help.

Corner worker information relayed from Laura Cole:

I read through a thread so I could make the best efforts to address any and all questions, comments and concerns.

No, you are not an ass for not working. It really is not for everybody and I do not blame or attempt to guilt people into it.

Almost every incident with injuries evokes discussion. Discussion is always good. I encourage people (who have worked or not) to ask questions. It helps get a fresh set of eyes on things.

It was recently suggested to add corner working info to the Penguin day; Eric Wood and I emailed about it. The Penguin days are full of racing things and we cannot fit in worker school more than the flags that they already cover. Learning to race takes a lot of work, and trying to learn corner working at the same time might be serious information overload for lots of people. I typically encourage people to get a couple weekends under their belt then come see us.

You do not have to wait until next year to be trained on corner working. I can meet a group of people pretty much any weekend between now and next April to hold a class or we can do something at the banquet. I live in Plaistow NH and will travel up to 4 hours away.

The responsibilities for the T6 worker have been properly outlined. He did have a radio, and he was the one to alert us to oil on the track, so he wasn’t sleeping. He was the only worker in the entire bowl. Everything that was supposed to be done was done.

Flaggers do not pick up bikes, nor leave the flag station while bikes are on track. A good flagger is paying attention and will throw the proper flag without instruction, with the exception of the red flag; that comes from the tower. Flag stations are before the breaking zone, so the flagger for 3 is in the straight stretch.

When you hear someone calling for a flag in 3, it is generally the T4 worker or because of an exit crash which is out of sight for the flagger. The flags are in different spots for Penguin and track days.

Oh, and the debris flag. Here’s the rule – the flag stays out until the mess is cleaned up OR for 2 full laps at which point the debris is considered part of the track

I try to stay off the lists and boards because that could become a full time job and, well, it won’t get my bills paid. I can be found at lauracole@usmarshalls.org. You don’t have to wait until someone is hurt, either. If you have a near miss – you can ask about that as well.
