I messed around with a lot of shift points this past year trying to find what felt most comfortable and was the fastest.

Where do you shift? Use the template to draw it up. Make sure you mention your bike and gearing setup:

I don't think I like running turn 1 and the whole back half of the track in 2nd, so I'm going to try this in April. Might have to up the rear sprocket a few teeth though:

You should drop a tooth in front and add 2 in the rear. Stock gearing is to much for this track.

a 6300 RPM rev limiter and HD gear ratios made for some funky shift points....oh yeah my ineptitude may have something to do with that as well.

i haven't worked out all my shift points on the NSR after just one weekend but i can say there sure is going to be alot more of them.

This is a great thread. Getting shift points is the first step in going faster/riding more consistently. You really can't use other peoples shift patterns unless you have the same bike and gearing, but it's critical to have YOUR shift points clear in your head before you make other changes to your riding.

edit: Oh yeah, in case you didn't figure it out I'm on a 125 15/38 ( at least I think it's a 15, could be 14 can't remember)

I change shift points depending on what gearing I'm running and I've been playing around to get myself the right setup lately.

And this track map looks like tight ten configuration to me.

Here's another, this time on my MZ Scorpion 660. Single, 48 hp

One thing that is important to understand is that one person's gear changes will differ from another simply becasue of pace. The same bike doing a 1:27 will have different gear shifts than someone doing a 1:23.

For instance, IT takes more entry speed into turn 6 to allow carrying a taller gear all the way to turn 8 on the MZ.

I agree with what Paul said. One thing I found that helped me when I first started out was doing less shifting and concentrating more on corner speed.
With that being said I'm sure everyone wants to know where the Woods shift at. I have followed them around in practice so I have a good idea where they shift and I think Jeff's gearing is a 15/49 on his GSXR 600.

T 1 - Down shift 2 gears and hold gear thru T 2. Up shift a gear coming out of T 2 and hold to T 3. Down shift a gear going into T 3. Up shift a gear at T 4 and hold that gear thru T 5. Down shift a gear going into T 6. Up shift a gear between T 6 & 7 and hold that gear thru T 8. Down shift a gear going into T 9 and hold that gear until T 11. Down shift a gear going into T 11 and hold that gear thru T 12.

The only part I might be off is Jeff might up shift 2 gears coming out of T 2 and then down shift 2 gearing going into T 3.

YAY now I don't have to go ask my nephew who's 9 how to use mspaint. Mike that is spot on for the crf450. I'm running the X model and the gears are a little taller I'm running a 42 out back but still spot on for shift points and gears. Now if I could only go as fast as you!!!

I'm happy I ripped a 28 off on the last weekend. I only had 3 weekends the last three and two of them were wet and cold. I got a 3rd place wood in super singles the last race of the season. I was glad a lot of people went home early.

Jay, most of the guys running Hondas are using a 48. The only problem you gotta watch for is chain length/tire clearance. With the 48, if you try to keep the wheel as far forward as possible, the tire will rub on the shock linkage. It also depends on the tire manufacturer too. Just pay attention when you put it together.

Yup, I'll probably add a link in the chain. The bike Sheesher (sp) sold to nazo had the rear tire touching the dogbones and he was geared at 14 - 43 I think. Running bone stock against the new bikes I definitly need a little more pull at the rear.
