Tire question

I've got a pair of Metzler's on the porch, K1 and K2 I think that a buddy sent me. He did (2) sessions on them on his '05 R1, crashed(cold tires), and went back to Michelins. Being as these tires haven't been used for (2) years would they still be sticky once heated up for a track day or two? Thanks. Regards, Jake

Re: Tire question

The easy answer is "don't worry". I've raced on tires older than that and they were fine.
But, if they were stored outside or were somehow subjected to bad kharma then they might be a bit less grippy. Even so, unless you're a mid-fast track day rider you'd be fine. Of course, if you crash, don't blame me.

Re: Tire question

werd, I wouldn't worry a whole lot about em.

I have tires in my basement that are at least a couple years old just waiting to get put on for street & easy track day use.

Re: Tire question

I track dayed 4 year old tires with 6,000 street miles on them this past spring and they were fine for the whole morning. These tires had spent 2 winters outside under a cover as well. They were very sticky at the track, but they did give out after about 30-40 laps, then I replaced them after lowsiding. The rear tire went from sticky to slick. Once they cooled off, the rear tire was like a smooth hard piece of coal on the edges of the tread.

My point being, your tires will be fine, but watch them as you go.

Re: Tire question

How were they stored for 2 years? Have they been subjected to freeze cycles?

Do you ride aggressively? Are they going on a 1000(+) cc machine?

Others may know your riding technique, I don't.

While I sense that Ken has a lot of good tire experience, and not knowing your financial status:
If someone told me they stored a pair of tires on the porch for 2 years (it gets below zero up here at night sometimes) and were going to put them through their paces on a race track using a 1000cc machine, I would have to recommend new rubber.

On a hot day in the summer, maybe, but you put old tires on a cold, damp track with a 1000, you are asking for trouble in my opinion.

My advice would be to use the old stuff on the street where the speeds are less.

Yes, unheated porch in central Vt.

Yes and TL1000S purported to be 130hp/89ft/lbs buy the builder but I think that's pretty optomistic

Ive ridden some with Highsider.

Money-wise, I'd like to use these tires if they'll be safe

I went thru 3-4 pairs of knee sliders over on T***** Road last year but RARELY put a knee down anywhere else. I have to ride over Rt17 a couple of times a week as well..... I appreciate the input, Regards, Jake
