My SV650 track bike has no instruments, and if I wear earplugs I have a tough time judging engine rpm by sound. I wish I had a tachometer but I can't fit the big consolidated stock instrument cluster under my fairing.

I'd really like to get one of those Spa tachs, but $400+ is about 5-10x what I'd like to spend. Anyone have any recommendations for a decent cheap analog tach?

I certainly agree that it's not strictly necessary (and I certainly don't need it at all if I'm not wearing earplugs), it's just that when I am wearing earplugs the engine is almost impossible to hear on the track -- I find it hard to judge engine speed by feel because the torque curve is so flat. It'd be nice to have something that I could quickly glance down at and remember what gear I'm in when experimenting with shift points.

It's definitely a luxury item which is why I don't want to spend big bucks on it. Maybe I just need a louder pipe...

Acewell makes some nice ones that are cheaper than $300

You might also just hack the stock cluster so that only the Tach is left.

I like my Tach too... Not that I need it on the Duc. 4th gear for most of the track is perfect.

This was on my SV when I got it. It's not analog, but does have a bar graph and numerical read out at the same time. I found at VIR it was hard to read when the sun is behind you, but once I learned the track and shift points I was really only looking at it on the straight. It also has a pretty bright shift light that i'm sure with some tweaking could work well.

I hooked up the coolant sensor option, but haven't been able to quite get it working correctly yet.

I don't like not having a oil pressure light, so I got a red zoomo light at Autozone and hooked it into the oil sensor circuit. Easy as pie. mmmmm pie.

That was so easy I went and put a green light in for nuetral. I have no idea why, it just seemed cool at the time.

I have a stock analog tach on my sv that will plug directly into your stock wiring + simple to mount!
I will trade it to you for your stock speedo/tach cluster!

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, that Trail Tech model with the bar graph is reasonably priced and looks indestructable. I also like how they have kits to just plug it into your specific bike.

I actually don't have the stock cluster, although I've thought about buying one on ebay. I was looking at the fiche and it appears that if I used a stock tach I'd need to fabricate some kind of housing for it. I may pursue this route if I can find one cheap enough.
