Theiglu's First 2008 Race Report

Got up there Sunday morning, 8:30. Didn't want to do all the packing and whatnot for staying over, so I figured I'd go up in the morning. Turns out the house is an hour and fourty minutes away from the track by means of Rt.202, so I left around 6:50.

Got up there, unpacked, tech'd and got dressed. Went out for practice. Instantly I felt MUCH better than the first race weekend (didn't end up racing, mind wasn't in the game). Still only put down 1:28's in practice.

Went out for Race #3. Just TJ and me as Pete's bike was giving him some trouble. I followed TJ for a few laps in practice, he was faster, smoother and running clean. Start of the race, I stay conservative and fall towards the back of the pack into 1. Stay that way all race. Pass a couple 'tards, keep TJ in my sights (about a second up) and keep in mind that I'm racing the track, not the other people. Start picking up the pace and end up in 2nd (out of two) but managed to pass my 2nd EX500 expert 20 feet before the start/finish line for the checkered.

I could have braked later in 1, in 3 and in 11. I'll work on that next time. My speed in the bowl isn't what it should be, but the change in gearing helped (went +1 up front).

Feeling GOOD out there again, starting to air it out a little bit and am very stoked to get some good solid laps at TTD on the 28th with Joel and Darrel.

Got "buzzed" by the top 4 motards towards the end of the race. Let me tell you, those guys are clean, smooth gentlemen when it comes to passing slower riders. Martieri (sp?) and his competition went by me on the brakes in 3 like I was standing still but I had no worries at all, they could have been fans in the bleachers for all it mattered to me. Just goes to show you that fast does not mean out of control.

All in all a good weekend, I got back into the low 27's. Still 3 seconds off my best, but I'm getting there! Never realized what 8 months away from the track can do to your lines, reference points and mojo. Glad they are all coming back to me!

It really is a huge difference between novice and AM/EX. The fast guys are REALLY good and 90% of the time have no effect on your line when they pass. It's all in your head if it spooks ya!
