EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Ok, so... been having a fuel issue w/ the EX of late & it fucked me for two race weekends in a row now. So for those that DIDN'T give me shit yesterday, thank you. I was in NO fucking mood for it & I'm still not so lets keep this thread shit free, please. Here's the symptoms: Last race weekend - Warm-up lap for ptwins, I got to turn 10 and it died as if it ran out of gas... Coasted to turn 11, pushed it into hot pit, opened the gas cap, made sure the petcock was on, no leaks... wtf... Got it re-started, sat there w/ it running for a while, revved the piss ot of it, re-entered the race a little before the 1/2 way point, running FINE until I get to turn 8 & it dies again. Hand up, coasted to & exited the track through the turn 10 gate. Replaced fuel cap, runs fine... LET IT RUN for a LONG time... rode it around, no problems... Next race, I go out there & it runs fine... I turn a bunch of slowass laps but finish the race. Fast forward to THIS race weekend... Same thing... bike "runs out of gas" in half a lap on the warm-up lap & I watch all my race fees down the fucking drain. So... ANOTHER clogged gas cap? Slow petcock? Wondering if the diaphragm in the petcock is to blame... not likely, but possible. Last edited by OreoGitorio : 05-12-08 at 10:00 AM. |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Have you cleaned your pilot jets? If not, clean your pilot jets. If so, clean them better. |

Did you give a good cleaning to the bottom of the float bowls too? That's where sediment ends up collecting, if there's any gunk left down in there they can end up clogging your jets again. |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.I have a spare set of carbs, a spare gas tank and if you pick up that control thingy, we'll be able to go through this thing next weekend. You can bring Jenny's bike with you ![]() |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Jets sat soaking in carb cleaner IN the float bowls... So the float bowls are also clean. If it's because the petcock isn't flowing properly, can the spring inside the petcock be removed? I wanna say it yes... |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Maybe I'm being thick here, but how would a clogged pilot jet cause this problem? I thought the pilot jet just allowed the engine to idle, once you're above 3-4k rpm or so it becomes kind of irrelevant. I thought the symptom of a clogged pilot jet was that the bike was hard to start without ether and hard to keep it running below a certain rpm. This sounds like a clogged or messed up petcock and/or or venting issue to me, like maybe your petcock is flowing enough fuel to run normally but not enough to run at race pace. Are you sure it's a fuel issue? Could it be an overheating coil or something? |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies. That's my thought process as well, Joe. I don't think it's a coil though because the symptoms went away after i put that new gas cap on there...... then again, the symptoms came back In addition to it dying 1/2 way into a "hot" lap, it wasn't idling all that smoothly & the exhaust was popping quite a bit when i was keeping the revs up... possibly as a result of a lean condition? |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Yeah I'd pull the petcock off and try and clean/inspect/rebuild it if possible. Maybe the pickup screen has got a big paint flake wrapped around it or something. |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.i might be way off but with it popping and losing power could it have a burt wire and losing spark or power? |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Pete, if you have a mighty vac vacuum pump put it on the vacuum line to the petcock and pump it up. It should hold vacuum indefinately. If it slowly bleeds down or won't hold, the petcock is shot. I don't know if just taking the spring out is enough to fix it. The only problem is if the diaghram is blown on one side it may eventually blow on the other, and then you have a lot of fuel on the floor in your garage! I took mine apart, threw the diaghram out, and made a plate out of home depot aluminum with home made gaskets on each side. I just make sure to turn the fuel off when it sits in the garage. Also make sure the fuel line itself is not kinking when you put the tank down. There, I wrote petcock, pump, blow, and kinky all in he same post! Beat that (no pun intended) Mark "what the fuck kind of times do I have to do to beat B.J. anyway" Dages 454 |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Pete I checked and I have all the wire, like I said, just cut in the middle, enough there to repair it though |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.If this hapened after taking the bowls off, maybe it's just out of adjustment floats? |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Did you check your battery connections. My Hawk did the same thing to me. Spit and sputter like I was running outta gas then died. Ended up being a loose connection. |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies. The battery connections are clean and tight. I don't see this being anything but a fuel issue... POSSIBLY a bad coil... but otherwise I have no reason to believe this is electrical. |

Re: EX guru's... Half a lap & it dies.Forgive me for not reading the whole thread, so this might have been covered. You mentioned a new gas cap. When you run the bike, and it dies... If you open the cap can you hear negative pressure release from the tank? Can you hear air rushing back into the fuel tank? |
