dragway

me and the missus took a trip to NE dragway last night so she could get some practice in.
backround:
some clown ex statie has a (stock) 1980 KZ1000 and says that he can smoke her 01 gsxr750 in a best 2 out of 3 match at the drags. uhhh....whatever.

so we make the trip for some practice.
rules:cant break into the 10s or go 120mph or faster without a tether and leather pants. we have neither. so take it easy until we get a feel for it
1st run:14.9/69mph
2nd 13.3/83
3rd 13.3/94
4th 12.7/112
5th 12.2/117
6th 11.8/123

so not bad for her. they shut her down after her 123mph run. her r/t kinda sucked but shes learning.
i could only muster a best of 11.6/117. i made 13 runs and the last hour was just me and some kid on an R6 and a revolving door.

Re: dragway

What the hell?

Shut down for 3 over?

I've run deep 10's at 130+ without a tether and didn't get cut....of course full leathers prolly helped the situation.

I gotta hit the strip sometime during the week...sounds like you can get a ton of runs in.

Re: dragway

I went up last year with my 03 gsxr1000 it was busy so i only got 2 runs in,first run was a 10.6 at 134 next one was 10.6 again at 135.I almost couldnt run because i didnt have a chain guard! Dont ask me what a little piece of plastic is gonna do if the chain flys off but i guess its a rule, but i was lucky enough to borrow one from a guy with the same bike who wasnt running.I also put a tether on it and was in full leathers cause i knew about that rule but not the chain guard rule.It was fun but alot of waiting for little riding.

Re: dragway

Did you use a race/track bike or a street bike?

If track bike, was there anything you need to do to set it up? Mount a brake light (I heard)?

Re: dragway

I was at the track Wed night and it got me psyched to get out there with my own bike. ('06' 600RR) I just need to throw a tether on and i should be good to go. Not that I'll need it on my first night but just in case.
Was the kid on the R6 the one who either couldn't keep the front end down or ride the clutch halfway down the track ? and did you hear the 911 turbo that sounded like a learjet ? i never heard a car sound like that before. All in all a good night.

Re: dragway

Why didnt she just wear the A*s and strap a bungee cord to her back?

Sounds like she had a good time... I'm not nearly that brave

im almost positive you just need a rear light. i dont think it has to be a brake light or even a red light.

Re: dragway

you need tail light.
she was on her streetbike
the leathers are in the bus
that kid on the R6 was fast. i think his best was 11.1. he asked me what size my bike was and when i told him it was a 1000 he asked why it wasnt faster (asshole) i told him its all torque.

Re: dragway

according to the mags it should do like mid 10s, but i was just trying to keep it under control. i only wheelied it once but i did get some tire spin mid track a couple of times.
i could cut a good light but just couldnt get it moving. too much clutch not enough gas.i even tried turning up the idle to 2.5K. the 650 was easy. dump and hammer, watch it go.
id say 1 sec slower than the mags is about average for me. i think i did 12.5s on the 650 and the mags said high 11s, but im used to launching it (race bike).

yeah the mags test rider was probably 120 pounds to. drag racing is all clutch set-up and practicing the launch. the rest is easy just tuck and pin it.

Easy to make: a little fishing line, drill a hole in your kill switch, attach one end to your leathers' arm zipper with a safety pin and the other end to the kill switch...

wont pass. you need an actual teather switch. $90? or if youre good you could probably get away with rigging up a jet ski kill switch

I'll have to look into that, thanks for the info. *Sighs* more stuff to buy for the bike.

Is that a new rule for this season? My tether from a couple of seasons ago was a fishing line based one and it passed without any problems.

Re: dragway

im just going by what some kid on a GSXR1K told me. he said he tried the screw in the kill switch and they failed it. then he tried something else that fucked up the FI, then he bought the real deal. said it was a waste of time and $$ to try an alt route just do it right the first time.

Re: dragway

Maybe I'll contact the organization that runs the drag nights but my bike will kill the motor when it tips over(crash). Isn't that good enough?

But what does your bike do when a tank slapper throws you off and then the bike corrects itself and keeps on going? Granted it can happen on the bikes and riders that don't meet the tether requirement.
