Spare Parts & Equipment AdviceThe first of many long winded questions I'm sure. I was hoping to tap into some of the knowledge of the board to understand what is recommended for spare parts at a race weekend as well as pit equipment etc. I come from a car racing backround so I'm used to planning out a spares list and such, but frankly don't have a clue what will be needed for a motorcycle. Did some searching and after reading a bit, here's what I've come up with. Current equipment first: The bike: 2000 SV650; TL1000R fork conversion, Penske double adjustable rear shock, woodcraft clipons, woodcraft rearsets, woodcraft sliders, M4 exhaust, sharkskinz body. Tow Rig: E350 Ambulance. AC/DC power. Room for two bikes in the back. Decently set up from towing around the race car. Converting over the interior to hold bikes, etc.. Current Pit Equipment: Comfy chair. Woodcraft front triple tree stand. Powerstand rear stand. Full compliment of non-bike specific tools.5 VP containers. BMX bike. Cooler/Food/Water. EZ up. Extension Cord. Scanner/Radio. First Aid Kit. Required bike modifications that need to occur before I see the track: - Engine Case Covers - Aftermarket front brake line - Tachometer or shift light solution Recommended Spares: TL front wheel w/ rotors SV Rear wheel w/ rotor SV brake lever SV clutch lever Woodcraft clipons Rearsets - used OEM or woodcraft components TL front rotors SV rear rotor OEM front brake line (use current) F & R Brake Pads Grips SV front master cylinder TL front calipers oil filters oil Chain? Rain rubber? Dry rubber? Any feedback on these lists would be great. Too much? Too little? Missing components? Additional questions: - Will the vendor at the track mount used rubber on rims or do they only M&B rubber if you purchase it from them? - What brake pads do you folks recommend for Loudon? I'd like something that's relatively easy to modulate but probably a higher temp range than OEM. EBC HH Sintered - At some point I'll conquer the whole "what class am I in" question but frankly that won't be until '09 so I have time. PRetty sure the TL equipment changes things. No SS. LWSB, TB eligible. - Are two sets of rims enough? One for rain rubber and one for dry rubber? Is it worth it to have a third set of rims for another set of dry rubber? I'm unsure of tire wear in a typical weekend of track time at this point. Two sets should be plenty. Anything else I'm missing? Thanks in advance! Fitz Last edited by Fitz : 06-06-08 at 07:49 PM. |

Re: Spare Parts & Equipment AdviceA sandwich. This is the most important piece of equipment that you could bring. I nice big salami sandwich. You will need a storage container to transport this sandwich in. You may need a spare sandwich as well because this is a consumable item. Make sure that you use the sandwich during your race weekend because they go bad quickly. |

Re: Spare Parts & Equipment Advice1 set of spare wheels is enough, you shouldn't be going through drys that fast that you need a second set mounted. EBC HH sintered pads is what I use. The TL front end will just mean that you can not ride in the Supersport classes. Thunderbike and Superbike are still fine. You should be able to ride in a GP class too. Beyond that, come to the track next weekend and get an infield pass and talk to people. I am #205, and I will be there on sunday. I will show you all the crap that I bring with me and you can evaluate for yourself what is needed and what is not. I am pitted on the grass, I have a white canopy and a green Toyota Tundra. |

Re: Spare Parts & Equipment AdviceWater and an EZ-UP. Extension cord Radio and or scanner. Pit bike Credit card That should cover it. I think you will have to run in LWSB. |

Re: Spare Parts & Equipment AdviceAnd you can pretty safely run without a tach. Once you learn the shift points and where the rev limiter is you will be able to shift by sound and feel. Even though they have an ambulance and infield care center, it is always a good idea to carry a first aid kit for when you puncture yourself with safety wire multiple times changing tires in a hurry when it "looks" like rain. I always manage to stab myself right in a vein so it bleeds for a while! |

Re: Spare Parts & Equipment Advicethe more common spare parts you can get at the track....having spares already isn't a horrible idea but it isn't totally necessary either. For starters, think more about being comfortable at the track than bringing everything you need to rebuild the bike. Ask anyone here, duct tape and zipties will get you a long way. Basic tools, gas, chairs, food/drinks, ezup, maybe a table of some kind, radio, those types of things will make your time up there much more enjoyable. To this day I still dont have most of the spares you've listed, including rims. As you spend mroe and more time at the track, and get faster and faster, you'll catch on quick as to what specific tools/parts you should bring. And if you dont have it, chances are someone has one you can borrow as well. Tire warmers might be a good idea though, if nobody has mentioned them yet. |

Re: Spare Parts & Equipment AdviceRule #1: find someone experienced (preferably with yellow plates or better yet, white plate/black numbers) that has the same bike as you and make friends with them. They WILL have that random tool specific only to your bike you will need that no one else has. |
