Re: VT Pitbike TRACKDAY Sept. 20th 2008

Hey Bread -- RM125 is a two-stroke, right?

It would definitely be too big for a pit bike, but you should still make it your winter project and throw a dual-sport kit on it to make it street-legal (Baja Designs makes a variety of kits, and they're not too heinously expensive). Keep the stock wheels, put DOT knobbies on them, and maybe get a set of 17" wheels with street tires. That way you can just swap wheels for the type of riding you want to do.

There are shitloads of awesome dirt roads all over Vermont that expand our riding options by about 200%, so I highly recommend a dual-sport.

PM me if you want to discuss.

Has anyone done this?

Whats the cost of turning a dirtbike into a motard?

Re: VT Pitbike TRACKDAY Sept. 20th 2008

Stopped into Land-Air yesterday and found that they do have an assortment of 10 inch tires in stock. Prices are right around $30. They have some 80/90R10 pirelli's, some 90/90R10 honda tires (wrapped in plastic, couldn't see who manuf. was) and some others.

FYI. I started talking to one of the parts guys about pit bike racing and i saw his ears pick up, but I didn't ask about stocking more parts, etc...

What do you think? should we try to get a sponsered series going? or wait a year and see what happens? Now's the time to start talking with people to see if we can get things in the works.

thoughts?

Re: VT Pitbike TRACKDAY Sept. 20th 2008

I have talked to Land Air in the past. They showed intrest but never followed up or emailed me like they said they would.

Cyclewise also seemed intrested.

We could try again. Definately something to discuss and plan this winter.

You'll have a tough time getting anywhere, as you won't have any volume after the initial setup sale. Minis just don't go through tires that quickly.

Good UPS today! Got the bark busters and new dirt tires today. Had to take a couple of laps on the track to try them out. What a difference. Still palying games with the suspenion, but is getting there.

FTMS, how much for your bar riser combo that you got on that thing? including the bark busters? If its not too bad of a price for something similar for my KTM 50, i'll buy through you.

Doc, I agree with the 14" max rule.

As far as getting any dealer buy in, there will be more chance once there is actually a group of people that own minis and need parts. Right now there is what, 4 or 5 people? Lots of people are horned up about it, but not ponying up and buying a bike. Let's see some bikes first, then we can go to a shop with a list of people and bikes and parts needs and ask for a deal.

FTMS - is that a KX60?

Re: VT Pitbike TRACKDAY Sept. 20th 2008

Tires on my fiddy are 2.5x10

I know that Land-Air has some 80/90R10's and some 90/90R10's in stock.

Which would be the best to go with? Seems like most tires are going for about $30 a piece so price doesn't seem like it will be an issue. Obviously I will have to run with tubes in the tires, but I don't think i'm going to worry about balancing them. I don't think it would make much of a difference.

Re: VT Pitbike TRACKDAY Sept. 20th 2008

The 80/90 (2.75") is closer to the 2.5 that is on there. Some people like to keep as close to stock tire size as possible to keep the curve of the tire uniformed. Others like to go larger so the curve of the tire is more for quicker turning. It is a crap shoot when it comes to tire size.

I have to run a 120/70-14 (4.00") tire on a 1.4" rim. If it fits on the rim and is round it will work. How well it will work....

Re: VT Pitbike TRACKDAY Sept. 20th 2008

The closer your bike is to stock, the more you'll want to stick with smaller tires. Street tires are heavy, why carry extra weight if you've got a putt putt motor? : )

Re: VT Pitbike TRACKDAY Sept. 20th 2008

^^^^^^^

Well, what I'm finding out is nothing bigger than the stock size will work anyways.

I have been dealing with Land-Air and they have been great so far. Tried a 3.00X10 Pirelli and it didn't fit. Traded it in for a 90/90R10 Dunlop, doesn't fit.

I now have to try the 80/90R10 which looks likes it is very close. However, the Dunlop tt92 is a mini race tire and is twice as expensive as the others.

IRC makes a cheap scooter tire in a 80/90-10 MB38 $12.95 they also make a 2.50-10 MB8 for $18.95. Kenda makes a couple also $14-18 dollar range. They probally are not as light and sticky as the Dunlop but they are cheap.

FTMS, can you get those tires? how's the tread/stickiness of them? I was ok with $30 a tire but i'm not going to spend $75 for the tt92.

I'm gonna take my 90/90R10 back and see if I can get my money back.

Mini-motards

Clear a 1-2 dirt sections with the owners to make the track longer and more technical and I'll drive.
