You are being mislead. The roads are actually gravel.

You city folk have no Idea.
There is only a gravel at the top part and it really isn't much of a problem to ride on, it's not like you are racing around up there.

ZX-Stewie and I will be in Gilford for the last half of the week. I'll be up there with the family for Monday and Tuesday. Not to sure what events, but I'd like to hit either the hill climb or Mt Washington.

Yes, the road is all gravel & there's no switchbacks. It goes straight up the side of the mountain... Very steep. That's what we all ride up to the top on. It's only for expert riders. If you get to the top, there's strippers that give out free lapdances before you go back down. When you go back down be sure to use only your front brake. If you use the rear brake it'll lock up & you'll go tumbling down the side of the mountain... happens to about 40 or 50 people every year.... most of em die. But hey, at least they got a free lapdance out of it (unless they didn't make it all the way up). I've been doing this every year since 1984.

I also go to the hillclimbs. The beginning is the best because it's all the little kids trying. I usually leave around the 250 class if everyone keeps making it up.

I try to do the Rock Pile early in the week. Yes, a lot of it is gravel with no run-off, no barriers, no guardrails, etc. And contrary to what someone posted, you CAN indeed make a decent race outta the climb if there's little traffic. Basically, I leave my plan open for this for the week as they won't let m/c traffic up if the weather's too shitty...

Also as said, the hillclimbs (Wednesday at Gunstock) are great early on when the kiddies are doing it. Then there's a lull when the mid-size classes hits the hill. But watching the 'anything goes' class run up on ancient Harleys and BMWs can be pretty funny too...

I used to love watching the hillclimbs when they had quads running it, but I haven't seen quads there the past few times
I forgot what year it was, 98 or 99? but I remember seeing quads that didn't make the climb and end up pancaked by the time they hit the bottom of the hill, spectacular crashes

C'mon last year it was raining an 40 degrees. How much better can that be? I did have a mesh jacket and t-shirt on. I had to stop at wal mart and buy a sweatshirt just so I could freeze my ass off the rest of the ride home.
