Well...just to show how ignorant I am. In the old days the Kanc was closed in the winter! Do they keep it opened year round now?
Gonna keep my eye on this one!!! If I can get out of my driveway I might just join you!

I'll go but I am riding my snowmobile.

If it doesn't interfere with the game I'll ride...

Don't think you understand ... it will interfere with the game ... that is why he does it.
He is working on that image of his, like muscling a wee-strom in front of a bunch of fuel thirsty snowmobiles drinking that venuzualan juice!
As for me, I am going to pass.
I am packing up to move to the state of Tennessee where it is like 54 degrees there and no snow. I can hear them Georgia roads callin' my name.
If I have Gerbings by then, I'll join ya.

your gonna want to take the long way around, theres always (unless unusually warm) a dusting of snow on the conway side near the high point, believe me, you don't want to be riding downhill thru the crappy stuff
they still close Bear Notch Road, the Kanc has been open in winter for over 20 years
I've been riding across on a bike on StupidBowl sunday since 2000

Hmmm...I'll probably sit it out then. 25 west to 16 north is a longer ride than I'd want to do and there's no way I'd take a bike east through Crawford notch in the winter.
It snows pretty much every night up by the lost river now till March, but usally nothing during the day. Is the "crap" you're talking about from a nightly dusting, or daytime snow showers?

360 & 72 will get you to the other end, or river road/fire road 217/fire road 81, you have plenty of options
you can actually move right along on FR81 & FR217, FR81 is the gravel road that goes downhill from the intersection of the beginning of the Cherohala (NC side) with Joyce Kilmer Road. the first section is almost straight, I was able to keep a 60mph pace till you get to the switchback sections, it's first & 2nd gear sometimes lots a loose aggregate and it climbs steeply and crosses under the cherohala at the Tennesee line, you can get on & off the cherohala there too. then going down into TN, it becomes FR217, the first mile or so of downhill is steep, very loose aggregate when I was on itthen it follows a creek into River Road, River road is very well traveled, and the lower end is paved to the Cherohala where it meets just as you get to the river on the TN side
there are a few other ways, but I haven't been on them enuf to have them solid in my long term memory and If I look on my delorme, I can pick out some points & intersections on route, but from here to there, I get lost, I've been down there total of 75 or more days total of all my vacations, I can't remember a day that I rode less than 200 miles, usually 350-500 miles, and one or 2 when I rode more than 600 miles, some days more gravel than pavement
Have I got to come down and show you around![]()

<lurking for Saturday>
Is there a meeting spot for this?
I'm going to play groundhog, if my weather window looks good, I will leave my house at 10am and head north to Alton Circle (it takes me 15 minutes t get there )
when I get to Alton Circle, if I see any bikes at McDonald's (park where your visible from the circle ) or at Alton Circle Grocery near the gas pump area, then I will stop
if not, I'm headed north on 28 to Ossipee then 16 north to Conway, Kanc to Lincoln, eat lunch ( around 1pm at pizza/sub place next to the light
then from there slab back home, for me, 93 to tilton, 140 in alton
I'm going to do the same thing on Sunday too
