Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

So who's really in for this?

Chris, you gonna lead us around? Or at least me?

And is Paige really willing to hang with Renee? If not, speak up now. My guess is Renee will be the slowest rider out there.

If Paige is busy, that is fine... Renee will pass on this one... no big deal.

after looking at the 06 and 07 pictures i think i'd want be be on the exc.

iv'e been on the klr through that kind of stuff more than once and wouldn't care to do it again.

The previous years' pictures are supposed to not be accurate for this year.

It is supposed to be much more big-bike friendly. I agree that I'm not looking to bring the KLR through crazy shit... just looking for a nice, long ride.

We'll be there.

Leading? ha! I lead no one but myself. If'n I sense I'm being tailed, I'll snick it up in some tight stuff, then duck into the woods while they troddle by, then jump back behind. Maybe I need an air horn for this event?

And I'm certain Renee will do just fine, if she isn't stuck riding behind you. The major route is comprised of roads and dirt roads.

Still not certain of my bike choice for the event. I've got a +1 counter-shaft sprocket for the TE450 on order that I should have time to experiment with, and some old Death Wings from a DRZ that I could put on. But I'd take 24 hours of waterboarding over 4 hours on that seat any day.

Paige should have her new KLR650 by then, so she'll either be riding that or her KLX250. If she wants to ride the KLR, I'll most certainly be riding the big bike, and we'll be riding (vs. trailering) out to the event.

Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

I talked to the organizer. This year's main route is much easier than past years - mostly dirt roads. There are some optional hero sections but most of those are supposed to be do-able on a big bike with the right equipment.

I'm seriously considering doing this (main route) on my 650 Strom with stock tires (if the wife can find something else to do for the day).

If you're comfortable with the Wee on dirt roads, maybe you could ride the event two-up? Afterall, it's for a good cause!

I'm very comfortable on dirt roads with the wee - she's not! She's only into short (2-3 hour) rides on the back roads.

Maybe if you count it as two rides, one before lunch and one after lunch?

OK, it's settled. You're guiding Renee around and I'll find someone that doesn't mind be "tailed"

My fear is that no one will want to go the speed that Renee will ride, so I'll end up riding with her. Which would be fine if I knew how to follow those stupid roll charts. I envision Renee and I going about 2 miles and getting totally lost and just rolling around.

We'll see, I'm going to try and take her riding again this weekend... see if I can get her to pick up the pace a bit.

You're really getting funny in your (our?) old age.

Roll chart? I see it as a fun thing to try, and can use the familiarity for when I try an enduro. Zero the odometer at the start, and ride on... You'd just better at least have one mounted up by then.

Renee can ride just fine if you're not in the way. No, really! If we're on big bikes, we'll be touring the easy stuff at a casual pace. Unless I'm eating dust, then it's WFO!

We'll give it a shot...

And then we can come back and reread these posts and see who was right.

Oh, so your roll chart holder is installed already?

Kinda wish we had that magnifying type...

ERRR... correction.

I assume I want to install it on the LEFT handlebar with the knobs to the LEFT?

Yeah... I can see I'm going to end up in a ditch or a tree cuz I'm trying to decipher little numbers and arrows.

Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

I installed the 14/50 gearing on the Husky (vs. 13/50) and took it for a short test ride. 5,250 RPM @ 50 MPH, and oh so much smoother. More testing to follow, but it seems like it'll be doable for the ride. Next, swap out the AC-10s for the Death Wings, balance the wheels, stack 3 sheepskin seat covers over the stocker...

Chris, it has been a while since we rode together and I am planning to ride this event on my KLR. See you there.

Still got the KLR, huh? Out of all those bikes....

Hey, I hear you can get a comp'd track day if you let Tony follow you.

The only way I will be in front of Tony is right before he laps me. Although I do have a friend in New Hampshire that just got this sweet Yamaha dual sport that looks fast, maybe I can borrow it.

Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

We're trading Paige's DRZ for a new KLR tomorrow, so I'm guessing we'll be taking the Big Bike route next Sunday. I'm still going to prep the Husky for pulling some street duty, just in case she decides to take the KLX.

Those new Yamaha WR250Rs are a move in the right direction for a factory dual-sport from one of the Big Four. A 250f motor seems about perfect for trail riding through the woods riding around here.

AND, it looks like we won't have much of a problem with dust next weekend!
