You'll need one of these for this event:

I have one but was planning to just "follow the crowd"... or at least someone my speed. (no comments, please! )

Is this an unreasonable method?

Dunno, I've never ridden a routed course nor used a route sheet holder. Since it's a casual deal, I figure what better way to get used to one?

What name are you going to use at sign up, "That Guy"?

The question right now is whether or not Renee will be coming.

And if not... do I ride the KLR or the KLX.

Her KLX?! Did you sell the WR? I'm certain the KLR can tackle the route if the guy plotting the course does it on a DL1000. I would take the KLR.

Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

The WR is not an option... not for 130 miles.

I will most likely take the KLR and Renee will probably not go... unless we can get some more time in before then.

We did a couple of hours total, about 40 miles, and she was exhausted.

Tony - Renee should go. She can ride with me and you can try to keep up.

I will ask her.

But I think the distance, more than the speed, is going to be the killer for her.

Maybe 2 days of trackday riding next week will help her out some.

But don't you ride the track, A LOT?

You wouldn't HAVE to ride the entire loop. And there's a lot of casual type riding (pavement) involved, from what I've read. Looks like I'll be riding the 990. That Husky's seat (ha!) was pure tortue after only 40 miles this past Monday.

I don't think I'll have any issues with the whole loop... I'm looking forward to it.

If Renee does go, the question becomes... who to ride with? If she hooks up with Paige, then I'll probably try to hook up with someone else.

Are you riding to the starting area? I'm considering trailering.

I'm not planning on trailering, but there's supposedly plenty of parking space available.

I'll ride with Renee if I can get a plated CRF by then. How's she like the Kawasaki?

She loves the Kawasaki on the street.

Wishes she had the CRF still in the dirt. It was a little lower, with better low end power, and she didn't care if she dropped it.

If you show up with her bike plated... she might just kill me.

I think you're safe Tony...it's not looking likely that her CRF will be plated. I have found that there are all sorts of obstacles to deal with between my insurance company and the RMV. Too bad this wasn't Colorado where you can pretty much get anything plated. May have to go for the CRF230L or XT250 instead if I want a legal dual-sport in Massachusetts. Her CRF may be available again if that is the case.

Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

There's a couple of obstacles, but nothing crazy. And you can always do the "back door" option... have someone get it plated in VT or NH... then sell it back to you.

My XR400 was plated in Mass from my dealership. It was done as I mentioned, with a couple of forms.

How long ago was that? It sure seems like Massachusetts is not happy to have a "off-road only" vehicle plated these days. Freakin' Massachusetts

Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

It was back in 98, but people are still doing it. Check out the thumpertalk or other dirt bike forums.

They were never happy... just have to find the right DMV person.

And again, worst case is someone on these boards can get it done in NH or VT... whichever is easier... then sell it back to you.

Re: Dual-Sport, May 18 (organized event)

I spoke with Vincent (trail boss) about the event, and asked him about the route. He's got the various hero sections graded by difficulty, with the toughest stuff easily doable with a DRZ400, or a KLR650 even (if the RIDER can handle it). If I'm riding my 990A, I'll not be playing in the rocks.
