Sounds epic.
Any thoughts on when you might be doing this?
Any plans for dirt? Water crossings? Does the bike need a winch?
I thought I should probably ask this stuff up front

Re: Ride to Illion Gorge

I've done it, usually make my way out there once a year just to hit up that road. Definitely worth the trip.

How come T**** road is sooooooo guarded, but you post up the I**** gorge road? Thats MY secret road, stay away!

it would have to be all pavement, too far to go on a day ride and include and rough dirt, might make Lincoln Gap part of the ride though or Rt 121 into Bellows Falls

I figger it's 6 or 7 hours ride from my house just to get there, no pussy footing around, stoppin except for gas every 200 miles

Re: Ride to Illion Gorge

OK, heres the plan

start
Saturday 9/30 3:00am my house, Farmington, NH

slab to Royalton, V, plan on being there around first light

might have breffis at the Bridge Restaurant then a loop that will include L******P****Rd. H********** Rd, T**** Rd, & E*******P**** Rd

then west on B**** R**** Rd, hope to be in Herkimer about noon, a couple passes thru the gorge, then I will work my way back to NH

rain date is Sunday

not looking for a big group, PM me if you want in so we can arrange meeting spot along the way, this ride will not be for wooses, it will be a long 600 mile + day

so far it's looking like

Randy, be advised that both the Lincoln Gap and Middlebury Gap are apparently closed due to recent flooding. The Middlebury Gap road (Rt 125) made the front page of the newspaper two weeks ago -- one lane collapsed completely and the other was partially undercut.

If you're coming up from the Royalton area, I'd advise taking the Brandon Gap (Rt 73).

I was planning Brandon Gap for the trip out, tx for the warning on Lincoln Gap, as I was thinkin of that route on the way back,

where abouts is Lincoln Gap closed, & Middlebury Gap, can I go up part way then cross over to South Starksboro or Ripton, or vice versa go to S.Starksboro then cross over to Lincoln ?

Randy if you do it. Eat lunch in Caz at the brewster inn, good food and a great porch. Also make sure and do the road in both directions, plus if you have time stop at the falls and check them out... very coo

Re: Ride to Illion Gorge

I grew up 4 miles from the top of the Gorge and got to know it really well. This summer I rode it 4 days straight and on the last day they snaked the shit out of it. a seemingly perfect road is now covered in goo-ee tar strips. I think i got a quick run documented with my helmet cam, i'll have to look for it.

I don't know. I don't know whether it's even still closed at this point -- I think Rt 125 through the Middlebury Gap has been reopened (I saw a photo a day or two ago that looked like they filled in the washed-out area with boulders and dirt, but haven't repaved yet). You could always try the Lincoln Gap road, and if it's closed just reroute to Rt 17 or Rt 125.

Vermont AOT Travel Information is a pretty good source for road closings in Vermont. 125 is open at this point; no indication either way on Lincoln Gap Rd (which isn't a state road and therefore may not make the state info list).
