Re: 2AM backroads blast! (aka: the "Let's hit a Bambi in the dark" thread)

I was just thinking about bumping this thread in the past few days. I could do 2am on Friday night (to clarify, it's actually Saturday morning correct?). I'll be tired as a bastard, but I'm down.

2am Friday morning....as in "roughly 8 hrs from now"

I'll be at the Mobil on the Run in Tyngsboro (the one near Rt 3...I don't know the exit number) at about 2:20-ish depending on exactly when I leave work.

A few things I'd like to mention to keep us all relatively safe:

DISCLAIMER: These aren't "rules". These are suggestive guidelines that will help the group avoid certain incidents such as cops or crashes.

--Please realize it's still dark at 2, 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning....that means leave plenty of space between riders...consider using a "5 second rule".

--Be patient. On the backroads, the overall pace will be slow to medium. I did most of the route last night and some of the turns can get real tricky in the dark. Corners that I'm very familiar with took on entirely different features in the dark....please keep in mind that shadows can throw you way off. Which brings me to my next point; respecting the locals

--Respect the locals. Since the pace is slower, there's really no need to stay in the power band or at red line all the time. The quieter the betterer.

--On the main roads (roads such as Lowell Rd or DW Highway, etc), I'm staying at 10 over or less. My plan is to avoid anything with flashing blue lights.

--Don't rely on someone else's brake lights to help you judge corners. Following someone such as myself that uses a fair amount of engine braking is not how you want to set up for your own braking points.

--As with every ride, please do not exceed your comfort level. If you find yourself hamfisting the bike into corners, try dialing back your pace. Riding scared takes away from riding relaxed. Don't worry, you won't be left behind.

If there's anything else you'd like to add in the name of safety, please feel free to do so....otherwise--> Mobil in Tyngsboro at 2:20-ish.

hmmmm.... might not be able to make this one then, I was thinking it was actually going to be on Saturday morning (that's how we schedule shifts at work, my b). I'm afraid the drinks and game 4 tonight just don't coincide with a 2am ride... next time tho!

No worries. You ain't stealing any thunder.

Depending on how Friday unfolds, I'll try for your ride too...I just have to be sure to meet up with some folks around 10am to roll up to York Beach, ME.

Looks like a possible 700 mile day on Saturday!

You only live once. You should call in sick.

I mean, who the hell works on Saturdays of all days?...

FWIW; I did a straight 36hr stint coming back from VIR. Full track day, pack the stuff for myself and a friend (who busted his leg), drive north to MA, drop off my friend and unpack his stuff, rearrange my stuff and drive home to NH.

My point is, you'll be fine.

I agree, my longest stint was just shy of 38 hours.

lol nah, it needed so much work I really didn't feel safe on it and that part of the reason I sold it, I did have a mad max thing going on with the flat black helmet and my leathers. And it was an 85 vf700 old school

It was pretty sweet and it sounded awesome but once I stared pricing out seals, brakes, carb work, clutch res leaked etc... I figured I'd rather spend the money on something else. Lucky for me some people need cash bad and fast, I'm just trying to not be a squid on my gsxr
