My buddy has a 3 year-old male ridgeback that he is looking to place in a better home. The dog bit a kid which is why his wife wants the dog gone (there's a mitigating story of course, but I understand her position). I've met the dog and he is super friendly and he played well with my dog. However, he didn't get the training he needed and doesn't get anywhere near the level of activity a big dog like him requires. A professional trainer said he is a good dog but has a heightened sense of "prey pursuit." This is a controllable attribute but the dog needs to go to a more suitable environment / owner: someone who has the time to train him and wear him out physically.
My buddy doesn't want to sell the dog, he just wants to find the right owner to take him. If you're interested PM me and I will pass along your contact info to the owner.
Beautiful looking dogs, I wish I was able to do it.
Heres a pic of what the breed looks like (from google images)
Goodluck finding him a good home.

Wish I could take him. Looking at either a ridgeback or a vizsla when I'm ready. Greats dogs.
If you have trouble finding a home let me know. I know people at the duxbury animal shelter (no kill) who are amazing at matching dogs to the right owners.
PM sent, I am interested based upon his interaction with my 3 year old female pointer.
Friend: man riding this really hurts my balls
Me: Well you're not supposed to sit on your balls!
Yeah, the part that I bolded is NOT going to happen. These dogs have incredible amounts of energy. I do part time dog walking gigs and I can run that dog 3-4 miles on the leash and he is stoked to run around when I get him out of my truck back at his place.
Good luck, they're beautiful dogs. If I could take an animal on I would be alllllll over this.
My pup is part rhodesian, see avatar.
Great dog.
Good luck finding him a new home!
I was surprised when I heard this but the owner admitted he hasn't done right by the dog. He has two kids who are super active in sports and a wife who went back to school, so the dog just isn't getting the attention it needs. He's done all the health check ups ect. but just isn't doing "quality time" needed.
I've got a goldendoodle that loves to be chased and the RR certainly obliged her, but at no time did it get rough. I honestly believe the behevior is a result of pent up energy, but I certainly would never sugar coat a biting incident.
This is one of 'those' dog breeds that while excellent, is NOT for the faint of heart. Nor is this the dog for the 'feel good' type that're looking to do the right thing, or for those not having experience. Again, they can be great dogs. But like many of other SIMILARLY minded breeds, training is a must. And with a dog like this at this age that's had so little training, it could very well take years of hard work. And be prepared to work a dog like this physically like you've never imagined...
As for his 'heightened' prey drive - at his age, it's unlikely that you'll be able to break him of that...
I'm NOT saying he can't be a great dog, not at all. But he certainly wouldn't be for the first-timer or those that aren't used to being extremely assertive. That would surely land him in a horrible cycle of house-to-house, family-to-family, rescue-to-rescue living...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?

That's a pretty definitive statement for never having seen this dog. Kind of like saying pitbulls are vicious. I've seen him half a dozen times, including watching him chase and play with my dog, which was fine. My sense is that he (1) hasn't been properly socialized including training on reacting to unexpected stimulus and (2) needs physical exertion. He's been raised in a family with two kids but they've simply can't give him the attention he needs.
Yup, it IS a definitive statement. And it's most likely very true. At his age, with his 'heightened' prey drive (your words, not mine) and his lack of proper training & socializing (again, your words), it's highly unlikely that he'll ever truly 'get over it'. Having seen or met him or not, that's a fact. You know as well as I that playing with other dogs & living with kids has very little to do with prey drive...
But relax will ya? I was VERY careful to point out that I in no way thought he'd make a BAD pet. I'm just cautioning people. I'm not arguing any point with you either, by the way. There's just too many people now-a-days that see a situation like this and not ever having a dog or knowing the first thing about a dog or a specific breed or behavioral characteristics jump all over the do-goodie thing...
And let's not forget, this lovable, misunderstood cuddly dog bit a child. Mitigating circumstances or not, caution should be taken at every intersection. And I'll repeat it again: THIS DOG IS NOT FOR THE FIRST TIMER NOR THE FAINT OF HEART. You saying otherwise is cloaking what could very well turn out to be a more volatile outcome...
And one more time: I'm NOT saying he can't or won't make a great pet. Whoever ends up with him is going to have to put A LOT of time & effort into getting him to be that great pet. I'm sure you & your friend will do whatever you can to make sure whoever ends up with him understands that. For fuck's sake, I'm not condemning him. Rhody was high on our list when we got our German Shepherd...
EDIT: I'm not singling out THIS dog or Rhody's by the way. My replies reflect my views on ANY dog that's exhibited those types of behavior...

Good luck with the adoption. I do agree with stoneman on parts. I hope your buddy and his wife do a lot of interviews to make sure it goes to the best suited environment.
It's being offered for free, right?
My point is a very simple one. I just don't want some Joe Schmoe to see this and be led by their heart strings without knowing FULLY what they're getting into. And I can't be more clear when I tell you that with some of the behavior he's admittedly exhibited, I'd say the same about any animal looking for a new home that's behaved the same way. It's not about THIS dog, it's NOT about Rhody's. My message is/was simple: proceed with caution and be prepared for some hard (but fun & rewarding!) work...
I sincerely wish nothing but the best for the OP, his buddy & the pooch. And I'm confident that the OP and his buddy know full well what/how/where to allow the pooch to go. I meant in no way to derail the intent of this thread. I just wanted to be sure people react with sense rather than emotion. That's all, really. If anyone interpreted my replies as anything but that, then they misunderstood me. And most importantly, I apologize to Bonk! if he took my posts wrong...
And no, I don't for one minute even remotely consider myself 'all knowing' when it comes to this. I would just like to see what's best for the dog & his potential new owners...

I know I'm not a regular around here, but that's seriously Fucked Up. They put the dog down because they couldn't find a home for it. Just because your buddy was to lazy to take care of his responsibilities the dog had to lose it's life. I fucking hate people who do that shit to dogs. Just because the dog isn't cute anymore or you don't have as much time as you would like for it doesn't mean you should kill it. People who put down animals because they are to stupid or lazy to except the responsibilities of pet ownership should be fucking castrated so they can't reproduce. And please don't tell me the dog was vicious. If the parents had taken the time to introduce the children and the dogs properly I bet the dog wouldn't have bit him. Teach your kids that dogs aren't toys and you'll never have that problem
