Yup, head out for a ride after work tonite about 4pm. I head up for a short bit into southern NH, and take rt. 32 through Royalston/Athol (FUCKING TERRIBLE ROAD) and then from Athol get on 202 south towards New Salem/Belchertown.
Well, about 515, nearly halfway down 202, in the middle of nowhere past the center of New Salem, I come up to a car pulling left, so I slow down, theres a car behind me. As the car makes the turn, I go to gas it past the car and continue, only one problem........the bike died and wont restart. So I coast over onto the 6" wide shoulder and prop the bike up on a rock so it wont fall over. Check the key, its fine. No lights, nothing, so check all the fuses, those are all fine. So I'm poking around checking all the wiring and then I see the loom of wire running into the ignition. Well.........its completely melted and the wires are bare. Well fuck.
So now I'm on 202, cell phone service is sketchy at best, about 25-30 miles from home, dead in the water. Unfortunately I wasnt carrying a spare wiring harness for the bike, so I was kind of bumming. Took me about an hour to actually get ahold of anyone I knew on the phone, had to figure out wtf to do and around 7pm I finally had someone on the way. Got picked up, made it home about 9pm. So now the bike is out behind the garage with the ignition wiring cut in pieces (I tried crossing wires hoping that maybe I'd get power to the motor, no luck) and dead. Oh well, I didnt want to ride this weekend anyways.![]()
That sucks big time...Is it going to need a new wiring harness??![]()

Good luck.. wiring harnesses are not cheap.
It looks like it was just the 3 wires going to the ignition, so I'll try replacing that stuff first and go from there, hopefully I got lucky and nothing fried inside the main harness.
Its definitely getting fused this time though. No fuses blew, just melted the wire........safe.![]()
Well now. Doesn't that just completely, royally suck.![]()
And I was gonna pop up your way to go riding.![]()
Just get that thing fixed for the 24th!

bummer Jeff, hopefully it's a quick cheap fix. it's a good thing you actually got reception.
That does suck, but remember to figure out why it melted, before replacing it.
Does everyone here have the phone number of at at least two people who have trucks, iron horse motorcycle towing, and/or people they can call in case of an emergency?

I was gone seeing the girlfriend in Manchvegas all weekend, just got home. Looks like theres a 3 wire plug just under the airbox and maybe a foot of wire from there to the ignition, going out in a few minutes to start tearing it down. Looks like the wires are only burnt to that harness, so maybe I'll get lucky and something shorted out right there, and HOPEFULLY the CDI box didnt get fried.![]()
And thanks for the offer Sarah & Husband, I'm pretty adept with electrical, and plus I have my work van to steal parts and wiring off of in the driveway, so I should be fine.![]()
Hey when you visit the girlfriend again let me know. I'd love to meet up with you guys. I live like 10 min. from Manchester. Is she going to school up here??
Well anyways good luck with the wiring thing...![]()

Yeah, she goes to school at New Hampshire Institute of Art and boards right in downtown.
I found the problem, it was nothing I did, there was a short INSIDE the ignition, I didnt bother taking pictures as I just wanted to put it all back together, but basically I ended up rewiring it from the ignition/on off switch right at the solder/pcb board contacts inside the switch back to the plug.
I looked in the service manual and found the main fuse, which was blown. I could have maybe made it home Thursday night had I known it was there, but I probably would have had the wires shorting out on the frame, so likely not.
I took it out for a spin and it popped again, but nothing melted this time, so I guess thats a good sign, probably something I did touching in the switch. I'm just going to find an old ignition on ebay or something and just swap the innards, so I can retain the key I have now. It literally takes 10 minutes to pull the tank cover off and remove the switch and wiring completely from the bike, so once I get the part I'll be golden.
BTW, anyone happen to have a 90-96 FZR600 ignition on/off switch laying around that they lost the key to?![]()
make it a push button start Jeff, then run a toggle for the lights
good luck with it, glad ya did not get stranded
i suppose this means you will be going to motorcycle night on tuesday. glad you got her all running again.
