Baseline setting for new rear shock?

I'm going to be swapping an FZ1 shock into the rear end of my FZR600, along with the FZR spring on the shock. I'm pretty clueless about what to look for as far as setting up a suspension. I should probably read a few how-tos and try and set my sag and go from there? I'll be upgrading the front too, but when I do that, I'll just bring it to GMD or someone to set it up, but for now at least, I want to have something resembling an almost properly set up rear shock. For now I have preload, rebound and compression to play with on the rear, no adjustment at all on the front.

So I'll be going from rear preload adjustment only, to fully adjustable rear, and preload adjustable front, possibly rebound/compression damping on the front as well, not sure yet.

Any ideas?

Its a 2002 FZ1 rear shock going onto a 95 FZR600, and the FZR spring is being swapped onto the FZ1 shock. I know I'll eventually take it to you likely at GMD, but for just getting around to begin with, I'd like to maybe have something resembling an almost, kind of sort of properly set up rear end, so I dont send my ass flying off the bike if I hit a bump or something.
