EX500 fork and shock

Pete,

I'm looking to finally install my Racetech emulators on my stock front forks of my EX. As far as I know, the forks have springs setup for a 180lb rider. I'm ~130lbs.

What would you recommend for fork oil?

Also, I am about to install a Fox rear shock for the EX. I'm not supposing a case or two of beer would lend itself to helping me get my sag and starting suspension adjustments setup now would it?

It would be next race weekend on Friday most likely. I'm hoping to get up there on Thursday night so if you are there perhaps I can convince you to lend me 5 minutes of your expertise in exchange for grilled meats and/or beer.....

I'm a professional Clayton, I don't work for food and beer. Unless it's really good food and beer. OR just really good beer and ok food. Or lousy food and ok beer...or just beer.....or a warm skunked beer and McDonalds....or a half empty warm Pabst Blue Ribbon and I'll lick the wrapper from Wendy's chicken sandwich.....

The oil weight will depend on the year EX and whether you weld up the rebound bleed hole or not. You should have .90 kg/mm springs. Does theFx shck have a ride height adjuster?

It's got an orange spring, and the reservoir has a red knob on the front. Oh, and a nipple on the rear. I don't know what that nipple is for, I'm inclined to believe it may be superfluous.

I thought the "preload" was similar or the same as ride height adjustment....but now that I think of it I'm sure it's different....

I do think the Fox shock has a threaded collar on the bottom of the shock for ride height adjustment.

It depends on the shock and the bike where the ride height adjuster would be, on my old ZX6R the threaded nut was on top of the shock, on the EX500 fox shocks it would appear to be on the bottom of the shock below the compression (or is it rebound?) adjuster. From what Micky told me this is not stock on a fox shock and Peter Kates added it on, mine has one, yours (aka the parts whore bike's) does not (just peeked). You might wanna ask him about one o' them

Yeah, preload adjusts ride height as it compresses the spring, but it also adjusts where you are in the springs range. Ride height adjusters are just threaded collars as you said, which extend the rear suspension inside the frame while keeping the shock parameters the same. Or something. I'm not a suspension guru, unless we're talking about coach busses

You ready for the marathon shock swap this evening?

I'll bring livations and some beer with fucked up labels.

Got my new Emulators in last night. Well, i got one of my new emulators in and one of Biggity's since he must grabbed one of mine while putting his forks back together.

Hopefully my "sag" is right. If not, 3/4" PVC (schedule 40 of course) is expensive so that will be the end of my weekend.

So ahhhh, I put the shock in. It works pretty well from bouncing on the seat. Ya know, minus the whole "twang" sound from my swingarm hitting the spring....

Any secrets to EX aftermarket shocks before I start grinding away tonight? There seems to be some steel ridges that are hitting the spring. It just seems odd that people would make a shock/spring that is too large for the bike dimension wise....

That's right it won't fit so don't try. Fox never made a shock for the late models. Only Penske

Oh bother. Time to pull it out. At least I didn't buy all new bolts and washers and cut up my underside tail section to make it fit.....oh bother...

I guess I'll keep my eyes open for a used Penske.

Nope, the spring gets larger in diameter as it compresses. You'll break the pull rods when you get enough clearance.
