Progressive springs, hot or not?

Always wondered about these, seems like an interesting idea but how do they compare in a racing environment to standard springs?

pretty sure they are frowned upon by the GMD group.

Not frowned upon by design, just execution. I've used progressive springs (not the name brand, but progressively wound) in some applications. Getting the right rates and crossovers is the challenge.

Makes sense, I noticed that progressive only seems to offer a single spring type per bike. Doesn't leave much room for differing rider weight I suppose.

What about the hyperpro type that are continuosly progressive? Any merit to that design? I suppose it's the same problem, overly complicating the damping...

Had them (Hyperpro's) and loved them. This was street use. For race use I've heard little feedback, but I know team Kawi and Yamaha SBK have used them on their shocks. Maybe data aq. would help in analyzing their performance.

Progressive springs are just another means to an end. They work great in some places, not as good as straight rate in others. Getting the right assortment of rates and cross overs can be difficult. I've tested Hyperpro for a magazine article and found that they may have some usable rates, but getting the information from the Dutch is like getting blood from a stone, only harder. Making springs is as much art form as it is science, so repeatability is an issue more so than with straight rate springs. I'd love to test more with the progressive rate springs, if I could find a reliable source that will give me graphs and numerical data on the rates and crossovers.
