tire wear signs ?see this, its a picture of a tire someone posted after a track day. its a Pilot Power 2CT on a 600 or 1000RR. Someone on another board observed that the tire has wear on one side of the grooves and doesnt on the other. They mentioned that this is due to improper setup of your rebound damping. Not sure I'm understanding this. Is this correct? How would the rebound damping cause this? Anyway just curious. Can you read about suspension setup from your tire wear? Interesting. -ak |

tire wear signs ?That is normal wear for a DOT tire. The tread folds into the groove on the thrust side and does not see the same forces as the non-thrust side. The reason the wear is concentrated about an inch and a half in from the edge is because the rider is waiting until the bike is stood up almost completely before the throttle is opened. The only force that the edge of the tire is seeing is cornering force. If the rider were to apply some throttle while leaned over, the wear pattern would be more uniform over the entire tread and the aggressive wear patter would disappear. This is typical of newer, or slower riders. They are afraid to get on the gas leaned over and wait until the bike is well past the apex, pick it up and open the throttle all at once. This puts a lot of work into the tire over a small area and the results are the tearing you see in the picture. By opening the throttle much sooner and rolling it open, the stresses are spread out over the entire tread, and the tearing is reduced to minimum. Rebound damping may play a role in the set up, but it's not the sole cause of the wear pattern here. |

tire wear signs ?Thanks Pete... So it seems like if one was as aggressive with the braking as you were with the acceleration then you might get even wear on both sides of the groove. Anyway this makes sence. I knew someone could enlighten me on this ! |
