That's because there are no short cuts to doing a job correctly. Seriously those guys are hacks. If any of my employees tried to service a set of forks that way it would be there last set for me. They did not take apart the cartridge, clean out the tubes, check spring preload, look for broken shims, debris in the valving, worn piston bands. Total hacks, not even a half assed job.

On this same note Peter, I recall you using a gas charged can of some very smelly chemical as a parts cleaner when you stripped those forks down. What was it? What are other substitutes for it? Would, say, brake cleaner work?


p.s. If I have a 25% discount coupon for GMD, can that be applied to the fork/shock rebuild deal this winter, or no?

It was brake cleaner, Isopropanol Hexane. You can use the coupon, but not combined with the special.

Hey Peter
I just picked up a set of 01 gsxr 750 forks for my SV. One of the forks seems to be weeping a small amount of oil on compression. I wiped off the oil then compressed it again and same thing just a tiny bit of oil. I assume the seals are bad as the other one doesnt do this.

I should be down by the end of the month hopefully or my buddy Q will bring them to have them rebuilt.

I have adjustable clamps to fit them to the SV. Don't buy the bearing from the online place, it does not fit right. I can also make a proper stem for the stock clamps if you like.

You should be more specific. I can see 2 or 3 pitfalls to doing it that way.. And I have only assembled a few sets of forks, you should be able to tear that apart.
