I'm planning to rebuild my forks this winter (fluid, seals bushings). I was wondering everything I will need to do this, and what equipment I should purchase.

Traxxion offers this kit:

Is this kit good? Is that a good price? Is there anything else I will need? I have inverted forks, btw (06 r6). Won't I also need a seal driver?

Should I just use stock yamaha parts for the seals and bushings? If so, I assume mrcycles.com is the best place to get these since they are OEM?

I assume Peter will chime in. Thanks in advance for your help.

I watch Pete rebuild a few sets at one of his seminars, lets just say I love doing things my self and do all my own work BUT forks should be left to the pros

Ok, advice acknowledged. I watched Peter rebuild a set of forks in september at TTD and it looked like something I could do with a little aggravation the first couple times, but might be worth it. I'd like to give it a shot. Learning how to do something yourself is a worthwhile investment.

My question still stands.

Also, to add to my initial question, what would be the additional equipment/tools/parts required to do a rear shock when the time came?

I built mine and a few others..

I didn't use the nice fancy fork spring compressor, although I wished I had. I used a 3" metal fitting collar, some threaded rod and thats about it for disassembly. Bushing dont always need to be replaced, only if they are worn. Springs, fluid, seals and dust wipers are needed.

I have since used the fork spring compressor offered from Motion Pro, Trax, Racetech and others.. so much nicer.

It's not that hard to do. I don't use any special tools, but I'm a hack! I do have the softjaws that are drilled to hold cartridges and pistons for actually changing the valving.

There have been tasks I couldn't do, like removing the rebound valve from my 125 forks. Needed a custom tool made out of a CBR axle or something that Peter just happened to have. He's handy that way.

But a basic rebuild doesn't require much more than wrenches, a drift, a screwdriver, a heat source, and an oil pan. Be carefull while using not specialized tools.

Yeah I have the shop manual. Haven't really looked at it yet, just figured I would ask up here.

Not that its a difficult thing but aside from the right tools you do need a bit of experience to know what youre looking at so you know if you need to fix it or not.

I see... I figured I would replace the seals and fluid for sure, and the bushings probably since I've already got them all taken apart. I imagine those OEM parts aren't too expensive, are they?

Ive never bought OEM fork parts. If your bike is kind of new or lowish miles you probably wont need bushings. I had 11k miles on my bike and the bushings were good. Ill find out how they are at 15k when I pull it all a part one of these weekends. Seals you will need. I guess if you were real careful you could reuse them but why take the chance in having a leaky fork? They should be cheap anyway.

The bike is pretty new and pretty low miles. I don't think the bushings will need to be replaced. I was just considering the option since I would already have everything all stripped apart. I def wouldn't reuse the seals though, like you said.
