    buying out of state

What does buying a bike out of state entail? if i bought a bike in ny, what do i need to do when i get it back to mass? heres what i think needs to happen. title transfer, insurance, inspection? i read somewhere about some states needing vin verification and the dmv has to inspect it? its a private sale if that matters. not 100% on buying the bike but figured id ask before i bought myself into a mess of paperwork.

if you are registering it in mass, it doesnt matter to mass where you buy it, you need to pay mass sales tax. Which means that, you need to go to the rmv with a bill of sale and a title and register it just like normal.

i bought mine in NH, and the only difference is I couldnt claim lemon laws (which i needed to). if you buy a vehicle in MA, the seller is responsible for anything that might fail a safety inspection. outside of MA, you're on your own. I learned the hard way after dropping like $550 to get it inspected.

so it is the same process as if i bought the bike in mass? basically get the title trasnfered to my name, buy insurance, get it inspected, then get it registered? any other "extra processes"? The bike is currently registered and is pretty much stock except for flushmounts in the front. dont see it having a problem passing inspection.

    Re: buying out of state

actually the process is as follows, fill out title, call insurance get insurance binder, then get it registered then get it inspected. However if you plan on moving to ny in the next few years be careful because they will want there money. I bought a bike in mass took it too RI and when I moved back to mass mass wanted their sales tax (cuz it was bought in mass) plus penalities.

MASS gives you like 7 days. After that they can start imposing late fees...sux, but true.

    Re: buying out of state

7 days to register it (including sale tax) from the date on the bill of sale. you cant insure it without the title, and you cant register it without insurance.

if you have the title, you may only need to pay sales tax first...then register it whenever

IM sure if all the sale material was dated march first no one would know the difference. youre not buying it froma dealer right? Youre sales tax wont be that much. Plus if you fill out all the necesarry forms (back of title etc..) anyone could go to the RMV for you.

    Re: buying out of state

As you stated just don't date the paperwork or just call you insurance company and have them use a runner. Send them all the paperwork and have them take care of it for you. My agent does this for no charge but I did hear of others charging like $25.00. No biggie though, downside is, if you register it now then you need to have it insured.

    Re: buying out of state

isnt sales tax 5% whether or not you go to the dealer or private? either way i think i found the answer here

Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Laws Chapter 90D, requires all purchasers of motor vehicles, or trailers with a gross weight of more than 3,000 lbs. apply for a new title within ten (10) days of purchase. Failure to apply for title and pay a sales tax if due as required will result in penalties and interest added to the original tax.

If you want to title and pay sales tax only, but do not wish to register the vehicle, follow the directions below. Please note, if you are going to register the vehicle also, refer to the Applying for a Registration section.
so if i end up getting it, ill just leave the dates blank until i get home.
