2-stroke weed wacker issue.. won't stay running

I've got a John Deere weed wacker that I sort of inherited from my family.. only problem is it doesn't run more for a minute or so then pukes and dies. I'm thinking something is gummed up, but I don't know where to look now. This is what I've done so far:

    - replaced spark plug
    - replaced oil/gas (correct mixture)
    - cleaned air filter
    - sprayed tb/carb cleaner in the tb

Still no luck. Any ideas? It's only a few years old and is in good shape otherwise.

Carb, no TB's on those things.

I bet the carb is gummed up and needs a good cleaning. The jets are probably plugged or partially plugged. Unfortunately you'd not be able to clean the jets and the rest of the carb without taking it apart.

Thanks guys, see.. I don't know much about 2-smokes.

Is it ok to spray a crap load of cleaner in the carb? That's something I haven't tried yet. If it's the jets, could that be a costly repair bill?

I'd take the carb off and take it apart to clean it. Without really looking at it, you might be able to take it apart without removing it....but taking it off completely shouldn't be a hassle.

You might need a new gasket, carb cleaner...not expensive at all.

If you aren't comfortable taking it apart, ask a friend or someone who is to do it. Probably won't take very long.

throw it away and buy a new one it will cost you more in time and aggrevation than the thing is worth.

I lucked out with mine by dumping a healthy dose of carb clean in fresh pre-mix, and then running it on half choke until the exhuast note changed, then I flipped it to no choke. Since then it's run great - next fall, it and everything else I own will be run dry before being put away.

technically speaking, you are wrong. a carburator has a throttle plate in it as well (usually, though some may use a slide rather than a standard butterfly).. ALL function as throttles, and thus are throttle-bodies.

the term has come to refer to a fuel injection system's throttle plate region, but it is not necessarily such a limited thing.

2 strokes should never be run dry.
out of fuel is out of oil.

Thanks again guys.. went outside to try cleaning out the carb again and remembered I pulled the rubber fuel line out of the tank when I was messing around with it before. So getting that back in is the biggest issue right now. Major PITA trying to feed that rubber tube into the hole in the tank that is smaller in diameter.

Grease it up and suck it in

    Vacuum if possible

Thread tough fishing line out through the hole as a snake
    then pull it throug

Re: 2-stroke weed wacker issue.. won't stay running

I second checking rubber/plastic hosage for crackage/breakage. At a yard sale recently, I bought a Shindaiwa brush clearing thing, same as a weedwacker but with a skil saw blade on it. Shindaiwa's are big bucks, not cheap shit you get at Home depot. Landscaper grade. It was in mint shape but didn't run. I got it for $35.

After head scratching & swearing, the problem was the fuel line (with integrated primer bulb) had a small crack in it, difficult to see but detectable by a slight amount of fuel leaking when you tried to start it. I guess the engine was just sucking air through the fuel line. I got a new one on the interweb for $8 or something, slapped that puppy on there, good to go. A nice slathering of carb cleaner made it run even better.
