Replacement for broken coffee table glass

I'm looking to get some ideas for how to fix my fuck up. Coffee table looks like this (well, it's supposed to):

The glass broke from one corner to the middle, so three corners are still intact but the glass is really sharp so that doesn't do any good. I got the table for super cheap, so I really don't want to spend much money on it to fix it.

I might try to find a sheet of plexiglass or lexan, but the original glass was approximately 27" X 48", so that might get pricey.

How thick should the glass be do you think? I can get a 1/4" sheet for under $40, but I feel that is way too thin.

Could I epoxy the glass back together? It was a clean break, but the crack would be load bearing, so I have a feeling it won't hold. Any special tips or tricks to try?

Would a wood replacement top look decent? I don't even know where to get nice wood like that though, so any suggestions there?

Anybody have anything lying around that they think might work?

You could get a thin sheet of plywood and then glue parquet flooring on to it.
Then edge the whole thing with some molding.

My folks have a coffee table that my Dad put together like that and it looks awesome.
Once he settled on the design it took him about 30 minutes to finish it.

Call Acme Glass on North Street. Tempered glass. They're cheap and they could do it for you tomorrow morning I'm sure.

You might also try looking around at Good Will and things and see if you can find a big mirror and cut it to fit. Then you can snort mountain-sized cocaine.

Seriously though, gadget's idea is awesome. You could also do the plywood with ceramic tile.

1/4" is plenty thick enough, but only if it's tempered.

Re: Replacement for broken coffee table glass

Well I think my plan is to buy another table off of craigslist for now ($15? can't complain about that) and go check out Acme Glass next week. The reason I asked about the 1/4" glass was because I found a frame-less mirror for less than $40, but I don't think it was tempered glass. I will not risk smashing a giant sheet of glass in my living room to save a few bucks. Thanks for the suggestions!

I did this at Amesbury Glass, got a glass cover for my kitchen table. Looks awesome, was under $200. (I have a bigass table)
