What are you going to start with? It may be better to just buy a drzsm or somethibg ready to go outta the box.

I built one from a dirt bike. The basics are rims, bigger brake rotor w/relocation bracket, ss brake line, street tires, a title, blinkers, tail light, horn, battery, relays, etc. Basically you have to fabricate part of a wiring harness. You also might need a bigger stator depending on the bike. Of course in CT you don't need blinkers.

I looked into it a while ago but ended up just buying one that's already street legal to avoid the headache.

    Start with
CRF450X or WR450 or A KTM (I think all but the SX's are road legal)

Wheels, tires, brakes and Suspension. Maybe some triples.

Or a WR250X or DRZ400SM or a Husky aprilla ect.

I know about the parts, it's more dealing with authorities to get it on the road

Sell it to a friend in NH have them pay to get it street titled. Buy it back bring title to insurance company insure and register it. DMV will only recognize previous NH street title and all will be good.

Yup. Shouldn't be a problem just get the required equipment on it (lights, horn, blinkers)

Re: Making a dirtbike/supermoto street legal in MA...

I bought a bike just because it was previously titled/plated in NH. The NH requirements are quite a bit more lax than MA. When I got it the horn was a rubber squeezy type, the 1 mirror was about 3" around and the brake light only was connected to the rear. I'm finding the stuff I have to do to make it pass a MA inspection is alot more involved.

Take it to a small shop, one that might be a little more lax.
That one mirror should be fine. You may get by with the one brake switch, all you need are blinkers, and a hi/lo beam.

As I understand it, it's pretty near impossible to do in Massachusetts. Best advice and generally cheapest is to pick up one that's alright street titled in NH or CT.

Re: Making a dirtbike/supermoto street legal in MA...

I have street plated many dirt bikes in MA, but I have never had to bring one down to the registry to have it inspected to get a title issued. I have always taken the route of "get the Title first, then add all of the equipment required", vs the other way around, which is the method that would require the registry inspection.
I suggest that you either buy a dirt bike that already has a Title, or have a plan for obtaining one, before you proceed. Be aware that a COO is *not* a Title, and only sometimes are they useful for obtaining one.

never titled in MA, then yes...that's essentially their inspection to make sure it has all the street legal parts on it

however, the tricky part is proving ownership. you either need the certificate of origin for the bike or a title...showing up with a bill of sale on a napkin from the truck stop near the woods where you found the bike in a ditch won't fly...

+1 I got a drz on the road through Vermont. Only works if the bike is newer than 15 years though, otherwise vt doesn't issue a title.

VT also does not issue titles on anything under 300cc, IIRC.

Can you write down that it is 300cc? If they have a database and can tell it's really not maybe say you bored it out?

    http://dmv.vermont.gov/registrations/drivers/title
The State of Vermont titles all vehicles (as defined above) except:
Trailers with empty weight of 1,500 lbs. or less
Motorcycles with engine size smaller than 300 cubic centimeters
Tractors with loaded weight 6,099 lbs. or less

You now know what I know. 'Grats.
