Racing flat track with an XR100

So since Wachusett Valley Riders Club is 15 minutes away from my house and I drive by it twice a day, I figured jeeze, might be something to try out.

They have a very popular 100-160cc class. Mostly TTR125's and XR100's (with the BBR 120cc kit).

Some guys run 17's, some guys toss Trail Wings on there.

So snooping around, I could find an older XR100 for ~$500.

    BBR Big Bore Kit, $240

    Tires, $160

    Total investment, $900.

    Think it's worth it?

I'm not running at Loudon anytime soon. MX doesn't really tickle my fancy. I like the idea of low traction, low HP racing. It's so close and cheap, I just can't help to think it would be fun.

If you've got the cash to do it and think it will be fun, why not try it? Worst case you do it a few times and decide to get out. You should be able to sell the bike to recoup most of that cost, right? Go for it.

god, that's got to be a thousand dollars worth of fun. I'd do it.

I'm almost glad there isn't a track close to me or I'd be drilling another hole in my boat.

Skip the big bore kit, it's not going to do much unless your new mount has already oval-ed out the stock cylinder. To really get any umph out of that motor you need to get into the head, or replace it. Stay out of the motor save for repairs. If the time comes that you think the motor is holding you back, talk to me and I'll point you to upgrades that'll actually get you bang for your buck.

Savas - NO FLATTRACK with the poor 70. The geometry is too sharp, it'll toss you without flinching. Not to mention the limited fork travel will hate that kind of abuse.

Under $100? Might be wishful thinking.

    boioioioioioing!!!!!!

(not me, but...) but this shit? ^^^^ hell f'n yeah!!!

IIRC - the OEM rear is a 16" and you can get a 16" front wheel off an XR80R, generally ~$60 shipped on fleabay that will drop right in without any modification. Brake drum, front axle, etc. all the same....shiet, now you having matching rims + add tires = $730 investment to race....and the tires may last you - forever? and you can make most of your money back if you hate it? and the track is close to your house? fuuuuuuck...do it!

@ tsorfas - don't do it. Too far from the shrew to be a regular thing. Go get a plated bike

Looks like a blast. Wish it wasn't 3 hours away!

I can't find any places close to VT that flat track, big bikes or small.

I ran there a few times last year on a clapped out stock 100 with 16s front and rear. Wvr is definitely allot of fun. One of the things you forgot is springs. Stiffer Bbr springs is a total necessity. Even then a 100 is just not really competitive in the mini class anymore. the 100s that remain are built and the front runners are on built 150f's.

Bummer. Was hoping it was kind of a stock class to keep costs down and competition high.

Re: Racing flat track with an XR100

Yeah I was hoping the same thing when I bought my 100. I actually sold it because I felt like it needed at least a 120 kit to be competitive and I would rather just spend the money on the big bike. I have a friend that was trying to sell a well setup 100 if your interested. I think it has 120 kit, bbr carb, bbr springs, wiess triples and 16s front and rear. I think he was adding around 1100 bucks.

Actually, they can be. Cam Moorehead runs a two class series. Stock XR100s and everything else. XR class has the highest participation by a LONG shot, most competition, and the rules force the costs to approach zero. Boxshop's XR100 cup is similarly popular up here in Maine.

Re: Racing flat track with an XR100

That's what I was hoping for. I don't want to get into a class where I need to be dropping wads to have a machine worthy of being competitive. I'd rather spend that money on track days or just start racing at Loudon again. This would be a cheap fun hobby. Unfortunately they don't have the bone stock class.

The correct query is who is Cam Moorehead. He used to be part of SEMRA before that fizzled, he started CAMMRA to keep racing going with a very simplified rules structure. https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk...722323800&ap=1 head to files to find the rules.
