Local police called me at home at 1:30 AM today

The officer asked if I'd just been out riding my motorcycle. I hadn't and said so. The officer then told me that another officer in a nearby town needed to talk to me ASAP. I took down the number and called it after verifying that my bike was still in my garage, and wearing its number plate. I got the other town's police dispatcher on the phone and she took down my number and told me that the other officer would call me back soon. Never heard back.

Any ideas why they would do this? The following theory is pure speculation on my part: The police collect and share a database of sport bikes by visual description combined with home addresses and phone numbers. If they lose a bike in a chase, they go through the database and try to get to the owner's house before the owner gets home. If they can't narrow it down to one particular owner, they call owners of similar bikes and see who is home and who is not. Being home means you are automatically not a suspect. This would explain the urgency of the call and the fact that I was never called back.

Anyone else ever have this happen to them?

If my theory is correct, the fishing expedition at 1:30 AM pisses me off. I have a rule that you don't ever call anyone between 9 PM and 9 AM unless it's deemed acceptable beforehand to do so, or it's an emergency. I think it's rude to call people at 1:30 AM out of the blue. I don't plan to lodge any sort of complaint though, I'm sure that would put me on the "never give a warning" list and I can use all the warnings I can get.

I cannot imagine that being possible. Too much work for what? A speeding ticket?

Reckless operation and other acts involved in a typical police chase would yield charges and penalties vastly more serious than a speeding ticket. I imagine there's little else for police to do at 0130 on a Monday in the little towns around here. Whatever happened was probably the most exciting thing going on in the area last night...

They saw "something" that required Police response. They got a partial plate, ran it through CJIS, Your info came back as one of the several responses, and they are now investigating. This kind of stuff happens all the time.

personally, I would file a complaint, letter to the chief, and copied to the selectmen

done it before an I ain't on no "list", infact, the cop I complained about got fired

If you don't want to go the complaint route, what about calling them up to follow up on the very important issue they called you about last night?

Just call them tonight at 1:30AM and ask if they've had patrols out and about. Then tell them they need to call the other police station asap.
When the police show up at your door with a WTF attitude, ask them what the call last night was about. It should go well, me thinks....

I would follow up, but I wouldn't complain. We need the polices help in possible stolen bikes or reckless operation cases. I'd hate to discourage that.

Lol. Some of you guys are funny. Complain about the police trying to investigate something?
Come on. Unless they really fucked up or were rude what's the point? I bet if it was a stolen bike that was yours you would be very happy if they were going everywhere looking for it.

Re: Local police called me at home at 1:30 AM today

A couple of weeks ago the local police started banging on my door at 3:30am. They apparently received a 911 call from my house, not sure if my cordless phone did it or if their computer suffered a glitch. I was talking to them while half asleep and explaining that nobody called and then they said, "Uhhh... Can we see your wife?".

After they left my wife pointed out that I was lucky she wasn't out of town.

Later was telling a friend of ours about this and she said it happened to her in-laws -- they were visiting her for Easter and when they got back the police had broken down their front door.

They wouldn't even come to my house when my brand new bike was stolen. I had to go to the station.

That's the point dude, they only put effort out when someone has bruised their ego. (rider got away from them)

Understood - seems to be one of very few logical conclusions.

This likely depends on the size of the place you're living, staffing, typical busy hours etc. Friday night in the city? No way. Tuesday night in a small town? The whole force will be over in a few minutes, as long as they aren't in the middle of a meal.

Not my experience with Worcester PD. Small town and staties yes.
But legit I give props to WPD. Iv met some exceptional people within this police force. Assholes still exist of course but overall I'm glad I live where I do.

My specific example was a Thursday morning at 7am. No officer available and they've yet to return a single follow up call/email or in person visit.

Hurt their ego and they'll lock the city down.

we live in the stix, we expect peace and quiet at night, maybe the sound of a whippoorwill

I guarantee you they were not looking for a stolen bike because it was stolen

somebody eluded them and they want to exhibit their superiority

I left a voice mail for the officer that wanted a call back last night. He did call me back, but I was in the middle of a meeting and asked if he could call me back later. Said he would at 7 PM. At least he did call me back this time... I'll post the story when I know it.

    ...so quick to judge!

I hope there is a pretty good reason, I would guess it's probably that they got outrun by a bike with a similar plate, screwed it up for yours, and we're calling to see if it had been stolen.

    That's just my guess.

That may not be so likely in that most PD's won't pursue motorcycles attempting to flee.

Supposedly my town has a no chase policy, yet they still chase people all the time.

Lot of towns claim no chase, yet it makes the news all the time it seems.
