Getting my bike up to a TTD???

Ok ever since I've started riding I've always wanted to do a track day but I've never actually went through with it because of a slight transportation problem I have. It's getting to the point where I can't take it anymore and I got to figure something out.

Problem is I have no way of transporting my bike to a track day. I don't own a truck, and I down own a bike trailer. Buying a truck is not an option mainly because I don't have the money for it, and I can't by a bike trailer because I live in a condo community and I have no place to put it. Technically I could ride my bike up to a trackday but I've read some threads on here saying that it's not a good idea for many reasons.

Advise???

look at the sticky in the tony's track day forum threads... if you know when you're going, post up in there and see if anyone can lend ya a hand.

or, I think I have heard that PK will do it for a fee, but don't take my word on that one.

While it's not ideal to ride your bike to a track day many people do it. I used to. The risk is if you were to fall and dmage the bike so you can't ride it home. The other risk is that you're so tired that you aren't safe to ride home. I've not heard many stories of either of these things happening, but it is a chance you take.

Yes those are two of the main reasons why I'm hesitant about riding up.

you will most likely be able to find someone with trailer space. I think peter kates will trailer it up for you (for a small price) if it comes to that.

Re: Getting my bike up to a TTD???

Ashland to Loudon is a bit of a hike, but back when I used to live behind Symphony Hall I would ride my bike to the track as I was in a similar situation to yours.

It obviously wasn't the preferred method, but I just did fine doing it. I probably rode my bike at least PART of the way to the track for a good 10 or more track days before I finally bought myself a trailer around the time I started racing. The times I didn't ride the whole way I got part-way rides from fellow NESR members. The times I didn't have a ride home I just had to keep in mind that I was FLOGGING my ride home and I rode accordingly without a single incident.

If anything happened, I knew my NESR brothers & sisters were there to help me out... in fact Jane basically FORCED me to put my bike on her trailer so she could bring me back to Boston one time because she thought i was too tired.

So post up & hopefully someone can arrange something with you. If you'll be attending an event that's not after a race weekend I'd be happy to try & work something out with you. (although there's only one of those at Loudon this year & I may have someone else's bike on my trailer already)

Re: Getting my bike up to a TTD???

You could definitely ride up, but riding home after a track day is what scares me. I was completely exhausted after the 3 track days that I participated in and couldn't imagine riding another hour and a half on the highway.

The good part is, usually there's a group of us TTD staff that heads to dinner afterwards & anyone's welcome to join us for some food & a "recharge"

Watch out though if Pete comes up to you and offers you

does your mom or friend have a minivan you could borrow?

height clearance is the biggest issue, but it can be done

you could also rent a trailer from uHaul if you have a vehicle that qualifies to pull it, and you buy a hitch (which you can sometimes scavenge cheap from craigslist or fleabay)

True true, went with a few clowns (Degsy, Denno, sxlova07, Hammadown, and I think 1 or 2 more people) after last years September track days and it was pretty hilarious. God bless Denno and his childish ways.

If youre going to use Kates you best call sooner then later. Calling the day before is not going to get you the results you are looking for. The further in advance the better.

If you ride up the day before and stay at the hotel, it's not as bad.

And as Pete mentioned above, if something did happen at the track, there are usually enough people around to get you home... and most likely, your bike too.

Re: Getting my bike up to a TTD???

I did 2 where I rode up and back the same day from Boston and that was pretty tough but staying in a hotel the night before makes a big difference (assumming you sleep well away from home). Nothing beats trailering though... especially when another kind NESR is driving the tow vehicle and all you have to do is keep the Dunkin IV Drip nice and full.

A stop for dinner in Concord also gives your body a nice chance to recover before getting right back in the saddle.

if that doesn't work out - I can take it up and back for the next track day which is before a race week end...(I live about 5 miles from Peter Kates...)

you would need to get it to me at least a day or two ahead of time. and get it back the Monday after that race week end.... or find a way to come up to the races and ride it home - stored in my trailer at the track..
