anyone have ideas for cheap on board video?

I have a CVS one-time-use camcorder, but I'd need to bring a laptop with software to take the video off the camera after each session, so I'm looking for alternatives

also, has anyone used point-and-shoot cameras with multiple SD cards?

Check outthe Oregon Scientific ATC2000. I've had my eye on it for a while, just waiting fo the right time to buy.

Neil (Silverdragon) has one, as does Tyler Henshaw, one of the other TTD instructors.

the item description says that the memory is expandable; does that mean it will also record? or is it just a camera lens that needs to be hooked up to a camcorder?

I just got the new Aerostich catalog and this camera caught my eye.
They show it mounted to both a helmet and bars.
At $139 it seems like a good value

Yeah, that's the Oregon Scientific. you can get it closer to 85 bucks online... of course that's w/o an SD card.

I just did a ton of research on this. My findings:

- The Oregon Scientific ATC2000 is the cheapest decent camera, the quality is adequate and it's super durable but it can suffer from interference from the ignition system.

- The GoPro Hero cam is the next step up, better picture and sound than the ATC2000 but it eats batteries like there's no tomorrow.

- For a little over $200 this guy over on the 13x forums is selling a setup using a decent Sony lipstick cam and solid state recorder. This gives you top quality video and sound for not much more than the Hero. I just bought one of these -- seemed like too good of a deal to pass up.

- The top of the line system is the Chasecam ($1k+). You can hook up multiple cameras into the recorder and integrate GPS and data acquisition. If you have tons of money and time you can make MotoGP style footage of yourself like this:

When you're up at any of Tony's Trackdays dates, feel free to take a look at what I've got running to get some ideas. I have a GoPro mini cam with an SD card, a couple bullet cams, and I use a Mini-DV camcorder on the front and/or rear.

I'm typically at the opposite end of the garage from Tony and his staff, on a blue R6.

the problem with the low cost camera's , maybe their Mpeg 4 compression is freeware - it just does not handle fast moving background very well....

I use my digital camera. I bought a mount that attaches to the gas tank. Its a camera that will also do video. It does the job just fine. In fact, and I just noticed this recently, on the TTD web site, the yellow group video is with my camera. This is when I was a spring chicken.

I saw digital camcorders at target that were the size of a point-and-shoot camera for ~$70

I have a box ended piece of aluminum mounted to the upper fairing stay where the mirrors would've mounted to

a 1/4" screw is firmly bolted to the aluminum, and the camera spins on top of this screw and locks into place against a wing nut

the wrist strap is looped to the screw, under the wing nut, but it's really not for security

and the $70 JVC camcorders are long gone

Check out open box items from CC or Best Buy. I was at BB over the weekend and they had a nice Sony miniDV camcorder open box item for like $130. Retail was over 300. I almost grabbed it but it didn't have a plug for a remote mic.

I just ordered that setup and will have it rigged up for the next TTDs.

I looked into the Oregon Scientific unit and the main issue is magnetic interference with the bike's electronics like you said. It really does lead to a wobbly/wavy picture. The setup we ordered doesn't have that issue.

I'm pretty psyched about this kit.

They MUST be SCREWED or BOLTED to the bike... preferably with a safety lanyard for backup. (if the screw comes loose)

No tape, safety wire, or suction cup type attachments will be allowed.

so I ran the camera today, and on a 2GB card, it filled up on 4 videos:

-320x240, 15fps, 53 seconds
-320x240, 15fps, 21 mins, 12 seconds
-320x240, 30fps, 22 mins 03 seconds
-640x480, 30fps, 12 mins, 02 seconds

check out the tony Hawk Action Cam.

Bought mine for $30 off ebay. Records directly onto an SD card (up to at least 2Gb) in AVI format.

It has a band thing that will wrap around your helment and it won't scratch. I've used mine a couple of times and it works great. Only thing is that the maximum clip length is 15 minutes. Resolution is not terrible either but it only records at 15fps.

Anything falling off your bike at speed could cause you or someone around you a problem.

Would you happen to have any picutres of how you mount your lipstick cams and get them to pass tech? I'm very curious as to how to go about doing this...

Tony, just an fyi, some of the suction cup mounts are very, very strong. They are used in car racing etc.

Just throwing it out there, you still make the rules.

Oh and if fiddling with the camera is a got to jail offense are all the instructors getting handcuffs? That would be sweet.
