Yes, even Linux crashes once in a while.

Had some downtime today...but everything should be fine now. The server had a 'kernel panic' which is the equivalent to Windows' blue screen of death. The datacenter tech rebooted it a few minutes ago and it came back up without incident. Server uptime at the time of the crash was in excess of 270 days.

It's not a managed server so unless I tell 'em, they don't know/care.

Ah, I see says the blind man. I assumed the hosting company was responsible for keeping the OS operational and up to date.

A managed dedicated server is, but it's also a lot more money/month.

why not setup a uptime monitor?

270 days is not that bad, assuming its not a load-balance server.

I've got a monitor that notifies me when things go awry, but I had it going to the wrong email so I didn't get it right away (it will go to my blackberry from now on). It's a standalone too. NESR probably won't grow to the point of needing more than one box, since it's regional.

Dedicated Servers & Dedicated Server Hosting at XLHost.com. I've had a few servers with them over the past five years and they've been great.

mid-west? so you have never been to the site? that seems weird. But what the hell do I know, I'm just a wire jockey, and was only curious because I did build outs/changes for about 2 years at the AT&T IDC in Watertown

Nope never been to the site. It was recommended to me as reliable hosting with fast support by someone I trust, and that was good enough for me.

I'm sure oyu save TONS of cash at that location. Minimum rent at AT&T is $1,500 per SF a month. Thats for basic. Hell most racks are 3'x5' so do the math

Yeah local places are big $$. I've only got a midrange server there so it's under $200/month.
