New Guy With A Hawk GT

    Hi,
I lurk around here from time to time but haven't posted before. Sooooo Hi. I'm Jeremy, and here is my '88 Hawk GT.

About 8 or 9 year ago, I bought a Hawk basket case. It was missing a whole bunch of stuff, but I was going to customize it anyway, so it didn't matter much. I made a tail section, added some 1964 Chevy Impala tail lights, made a visor over the headlight and a variety of other stuff. Then I road it each summer for a few years.

Then life got busy, and it was buried in the deepest darkest depths of my shed, yard, and basement for a few years.... It went Waaaay down hill.

This year I wanted to ride it again, so I took it all apart and began the process of cleaning, polishing, soda blasting, priming, and painting everything.

About 2 weeks later I reassembled it and started riding again. Tomorrow I hope to get my first inspection sticker in about 3-4 years. Oh and I have new tires coming tomorrow that I need to get mounted. I'm pumped!

    -Jeremy

You Sir know nothing of true greatness. I of course refer to ones ability to steal, drink and generally do nothing, and carry it off with style

Re: New Guy With A Hawk GT

GREAT NEWS! The guy that I was hoping to get a sticker from just gave me the ol' "no sir......I don't like it"

    I have to:
    - Move my plate someplace else
    - Add license plate lights. Blah. I just ordered some on eBay.
    - Mount my new tires that are waiting for me at my house. (I may try this myself for a fun little mid week challenge)

jwm2k3 > You, Sir, have an awesome RC51. My right brake lever came off of a bike identical to yours, just much more smashed. I like yours better than the smashed one.

Find someone else to inspect it. That plate location is perfect.

Welcome Jeremy. There are a bunch of us NEDSM guys here.

I didn't realize that you had it together so long ago and then had to tear it apart again!

Hi Tommy! Glad to see a familiar name!

Yes, I have had the bike for somewhere around 8 years I'd say. I have probably ridden it 4000 or less miles total though. I'm going to attempt to beat that total during this summer alone. We'll see! I just need to make it a little more comfy, and it should be doable.

Re: New Guy With A Hawk GT

So my new tires were waiting for me when I got home today. I was a bit anxious to try them out and I didn't really want to work with somebody else's schedule. Soooo.

    I took the wheel off.

Then I broke the bead on the old tire with a shovel. Yeah I basically just jumped on it. It worked perfectly!

Then I shoved 3/4" by 2" by ~ 6" pieces of pine around the edges to hold the bead down while I popped the tire off the rim using a pry bar, a flat screwdriver, and some leather gloves to protect the paint on the wheel from chipping. Tada! - Tire came off.

Then I lubed the new one with laundry detergent, and slipped it onto the wheel with the same pine holding the bead down.

It was then time to inflate the tire, get the bead sealed on the wheel and reinstall it on the motorcycle.

Rinse & repeat for the front wheel.

The new tires feel much better than the dry rotted ones that were on there since I bought the bike 8+ years ago. My friends have been telling me for years that I my tires are rocks. They were right. The new ones are far less rocky.
