It's pretty hit or miss...ala eBay circa 2002

No special advice other than to be cautious. You're dealing with factories and traders, not resellers, so their preference is to sell the highest volume per transaction.

use a burner email to sign up. I made that mistake and still get a ton of spam emails.
Overall it's great if you know exactly what you're looking for and don't mind waiting 3 months for it to show up. I've had great luck ordering stuff like tire studs for riding on ice and flashlights.
    They really have everything though.
    Case in point: https://www.alibaba.com/product-deta...4ac3kVHL5T&s=p

That's a good suggestion. I'd also be weary of anything you might want to exercise a warranty on or that has a decently big price tag. I've read stories of guys who bought motorcycles or cars that showed up months late, damaged, wrong model/color, or not working. Those companies can disappear in an instant and you'll have no recourse.

I'm looking at buying an engine for my K-Pipe maybe a lot of 10, and selling 7 of them right away, some of the vendors sell them individually, but between price & shipping, I could have 3 for the same price, and 7 to sell to pay for em

    Re: Alibaba

    I've bought things before.

As mentioned, use an email that you would only use for spam. Surprisingly though, I get very little spam from other chinese places.

I've filed a dispute before and again, surprisingly, I got a refund fairly quickly.

I used to only look for places that would accept paypal, but I'm not sure any do anymore. So I have a credit card that I only use for limited online purchases... it generates a new number for each transaction.

I never have, and I've never had an issue, but then again I've never spent more than like $50 on an order. If you're buying a whole engine(s?) it might not be the worst idea.

    Just like anything else.

If you can't afford to write off the item in the worst case scenario as a complete loss, then you buy the insurance.

If losing the item/$ is of no significance then insurance isn't worth it.

Full disclaimer: I don't know the text of the aliexpress assurance or what exactly it covers

    Re: Alibaba

Anyone want to explain what's going on with that site? Diesel engines for 500 bucks. Turbos for 100. Is it basically a depository for Chinese knock-off anything. But I mean, even those prices seem super lower.

kinda hard for the Chinese to knock off a Chinese product, many sellers require buying in lots of 10, or 20 minimum, this vendor will sell a single unit

If I wanted to but a hundred engines, I could probably find them for 1/3rd to 1/4th the price of a single unit

Well, in this case they're knocking off both Honda and Kawasaki at the same time.

I suppose, many of those Honda engines were mfg by Chinese companies, under contract, Kymco, for instance manufactures more products for other manufacturers under contract, than they do for their own badge
