    Credit Cards

looking for recommendations on best card for international purchases

my everyday card thru my local bank, frowns in international purchases, I have to tell them in advance, and they only note the account for one day, most places don't charge account till ready to ship, so that never works well, I ended up snail mailing a check to Vessey Seeds in PEI

this time I want to buy an engine on Alibaba

Cap one does not charge a premium for non USD transactions. Just whatever the daily exchange rate is. Makes it a pretty sweet travel card. I think that is what you are after.

I use Capital One Venture for everything. You also earn points that can be used for a lot of various purchases and travel expenses.
I have the app on my phone and I receive a notification within seconds of any activity on my account, itís a nice sense of security.

    Re: Credit Cards

I've never had any charges for international purchases when buying in USD, alibaba, aliexpress, ebay, paypal etc.

Only time fees are involved is when you're converting and then it can get funky especially with local banks, who tend to use rates very favorable to them and then charge a fee on top of that. I've been burned with them before.

After 37 calls nobody could actually tell me what is the exchange rate that they are planning to use at the time of transaction. They just say they use an intermediary creditor to do so and the creditor wouldn't give me an answer no matter which line I'd call to find out. It was actually infuriating in how incompetent agencies were in this situation and how nobody could give an answer and just passed the buck on.

    Re: Credit Cards

not charges I am asking about, my issue has been my card thru local bank does not allow international transactions

So if I am understanding correctly, the Capital One Venture card, you don't need to call them ahead to make an international online purchase

How bout Capital One Quicksilver card ? the Venture card has a $95 annual fee

All major credit cards will work.
However Capital One has no charges and I have yet to find a place it doesn’t get accepted.
Amex same thing but not for all their cards
Discover works but DOES charge foreign transaction fees.

    Re: Credit Cards

Literally any card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees will work. Find one with decent rewards that work for you & snatch it up.

Since I have Amazon Prime and buy a fair amount of stuff on smile.amazon.com (with charitable contributions going to the Karen Hornbecker Memorial Fund to help out injured LRRS (NEMRR) racers), I use the Chase Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature.

mine doesn't have any international transaction fees, the reason I am asking, my card thru my local just shuts off credit to foreign purchases unless you call them first, (just like multiple small purchases across state lines, about the 5th time you gas up, ya gotta use a different card, or pay cash) the only ones (foreign) that I have been able to make, are using my credit card thru pay pal.

I have been using Amazon Smile for a few years, supporting a local non profit group

Looks like I will get the Capital One Quicksilver card, they have a $200 cash bonus for spending $500 in the first 3 months yay! that will offset shipping cost

I just don't like the interest rates if not paid in 30 days, even their best rates are more than double what my credit union is

mine IS a major card, it is a VISA, issued thu my credit union, it IS accepted, there are NO fees, just that my bank considers them fraudulent unless you call first, then they note the card for 24 hrs, BUT, because the vendor doesn't charge till they ship, which is rarely in 24 hours, so you end up going back & forth with vendor and bank too coordinate the transaction

I'm just looking for a VISA card that doesn't consider foreign transactions fraudulent

I wish PayPal was an option, I would be able to use my local bank issued VISA

VISA/MC, T/T, Apple Pay & Western Union are their options

    Re: Credit Cards

I've had no problems with my Chase Visa or my AMEX cards. Get the card through a major bank - Chase, Citi, Capital One or go straight to the card issuer like AMEX and you'll be fine.

    Re: Credit Cards

TD bank has a good basic card that doesnt charge any foreign transaction fees.

Personally i use Starling now for my international purchases but its not an easy card to get and more like a debt card.

Some cards might not charge a fee for the transaction but you also don't chose what rate they use at the time of doing the exchange.

Any small fee can easily be compensated by simply using a more favorable exchange rate at the time without you being non the wiser.

the vendor I am planning on purchasing from is doing business in US dollars, conversion is not a factor

    Re: Credit Cards

I use the Citi 2% cash back card. When an international purchase is made it sends me a notification on the phone I can accept or deny. I bought a road bike from Ireland with it, and parts from my triumph from England. Sounds like your all set, just throwing it out there as a suggestion. Has less benefits than other cards but its easier to manage. No yearly fee, flat 2% back. Less than others but no rotating categories which I hated.

Was coming in here to recommend my card of choice only to be not at all surprised Randy’s needs for a credit card don’t even remotely align with the rest of humanity.
