    Running of the Bulls

Finally fulfilled a life-long dream and made it to Spain to run with the bulls. Ran on July 8th and had a very close call just past "dead man's corner." Lead bull broke from the pack and charged at us...I came within inches of being taken out, and likely gored by a very angry 1,400 lb. bull. The incident was written up in the Spanish press, and the attached photo taken with me in all white sleeves spinning out of the way as the bull nailed the people next to me. Scariest moment of my life, for sure. We ran into the bull ring with the bulls at the end of the run, without realizing they had blocked the entrance and we were all stuck in there. We were high-fiving with other runners in the ring when the first bull was released in on us. Everyone scattered. We had no idea that the runners had now become entertainment for the crowd. One by one, each bull was released back into the ring with us for about 5 or 6 minutes as the crowed watched us avoid getting killed. It was intense. After about 40 minutes, there were no more bulls and we were let out of the ring. We realized why everyone in the crowd paid to watch the runners enter the ring...

Ran one more day before we left...what a rush.

I have to admit I just *really* don't get the attraction of this. Speaking as a person who has motorcycled daily splitting lanes in Southern California traffic, speaking as a person who has greatly enjoyed skydiving, speaking as a person who loves to eat kitfo (an African dish of slightly warmed buttered raw beef), this event still seems just plain irrational to me.

No offense, Phil, but I really don't "get" your list either. Seems kind of tame. You compared eating a steak to running away from an enraged herd of them.

I don't get this activity either. I enjoy watching a bunch of idiots getting injured on this and I feel very bad for the animal.
I don't know what anyone's expectations besides a great hospital visit or death may be. I don't see the entertainment or the fun in torturing such a great and powerful animal.
No offense OP I'm glad you enjoyed yourself seems like something you wanted to do forever I just don't get it. May the Internet have some mercy on me lol

The running of the bulls is not the same as the bullfight; for the running itself the bulls are not harmed (unless they slip and fall or something). The bullfights are held afterward.

Ever try taming a 1000+ cc monster of a motorcycle around a predetermined circuit. Similar results can happen. What’s the point? Right.

Scott, what a heart pumping experience that must have been. thanks for sharing. Not a lot of people can say they have done that.

The bullfight is at night, unrelated to the run, and a big deal. My buddy and I went that night and ended up walking out after the first "fight." It was barbaric, honestly. You have so much respect for these amazing animals, particularly after the run. To see them slaughtered in the ring is depressing. The people in the crowd looked at us like we were insane as we pushed our way out of the seats to exit. It's a big cultural tradition there, and I don't judge it, but there was nothing entertaining for me seeing these beautiful animals killed in the ring.

Actually, they are one in the same event in Spain. The whole event is called "The running of the bulls" and includes the bullfight.

Where I come from, we don't run, and we use our bare hands....

Not something I'd do, but understand the intrigue completely. Glad you were able to fulfill your quest.

You don't look scared - you look like you're about to go kung fu on his ass if he turns around . . .

Read bostongixxer's post two posts above yours. He has a different account, and he was actually there.

The running evolved from the practice of getting the bulls TO the ring for the bullfights to be held later.
So it is related, but it is not the bullfights itself.

(And the phrase is "one and the same".)

Myself and approx 20 classmates also had incredulous looks from the crowd when we went to a bullfight, in or near Madrid.
We cheered for the bull as the matador was having an extremely difficult time with it, and he even got knocked down several times.
Looking back, I feel lucky we were not thrown into the ring by the disgruntled spectators!
