I know there are a number of electricians here, so I'm hoping to get a straight read on this.
We have a 100 amp service in our home that had some trouble after the thanksgiving storm last year. We are looking at replacing the main panel with a 150 amp, 40 circuit panel.
What is a reasonable charge for this, including permit.
I'm not looking for the side-work cash price or to low ball it. The town inspector had to come out in November, so all the work needs to be legit, permitted and inspected.
Just not looking to get hosed...
200 amp service is probably what you'll end up with, not a lot of 150 amp services going in. It's an overhead service? It depends on how old the house is and how many circuits there are, the low end is around $1600 and the high end is $2100. The permit is anywhere from $40-100, so throw that on top.
If your main breaker is located outside it could cost a bit more.
Main breaker inside, i think, meter is outside. house is about 40 years old, all romex, abouth 1/2 of the house 20 years old.
my first inclination was $2,000 so I agree with above.

I paid $1200 to have a 200 amp service redone, box emptied, spahgetti cleaned up, breakers reinstalled. I actually feel comfortable working in that box now. That also covered installing an 8 breaker transfer switch and outside generator hookup, so $1600 to $2000 with parts for a whole new panel sounds reasonable.
I need to figure out now if I should get a secondary panel for my garage next...
Overhead lines to the roof, fed down the exterior to the meter, then inside to the panel in the basement.
The guy who looked at it said the current panel is located under water pipes and may have to be built out a bit from the foundation wall depending on the inspector.
He quoted $2,400
This will be the first electrical work I have ever paid someone else to do...
Sounds about right if he has to relocate, just make sure his quote includes that possibility.
I had mine done last year. 100 amp screw fuse to a 200 amp service for 1900.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
Sounds like a reasonable price to myself as well . Your not getting hosed .
Thanks for all the input. Called him up and made a fair deal, his price but a 200 amp service.
I never believe it's worth my time to drag in multiple quotes over a few hundred bucks. I'd much rather have a guy who isn't feeling like he got squeeed. The replies here helped me get comfortable with the work and the number.
thanks again!
just had mine done last week 200amp service ...place was out of Braintree think it was right around 2k for whole job ..let me know if you need his info
